Chapter 5 - THE TANGLED WEB

The next forty-eight hours passed in an intense blur of legal proceedings, police depositions, and protective measures.

Daniel immediately hired a high-profile criminal attorney and requested a full forensic sweep of his entire estate. Crime scene investigators wearing white hazmat suits walked through the rooms where Evelyn had spent eighteen months cooking, cleaning, and living.

They found small trace amounts of toxic chemicals hidden behind the false backing of Evelyn’s vanity mirror in the guest bedroom.

News of the arrest hit the local Boston papers on Thursday morning: "Prominent Suburban Family Uncovers Poison Plot After Toddler Alerts Father."

While the legal battle escalated, Daniel moved Toby and Lily to a quiet, secure beach cottage in Cape Cod owned by Clara’s sister, Sarah.

Sarah was a warm, spirited woman with Clara’s bright smile and kind eyes. The moment Daniel pulled into the driveway, Sarah rushed out, pulling all three of them into her arms, crying tears of anger and relief.

"I knew something was wrong with that woman, Dan!" Sarah said as she set hot bowls of chicken noodle soup on the wooden kitchen table. "Clara called me two weeks before she passed... she sounded so scared, but she swore she was taking care of it."

"She was trying to protect all of us," Daniel said, staring out the window at the gray waves crashing along the shoreline. "She died protecting Toby and Lily."

Toby sat at the table, quietly dipping his grilled cheese sandwich into his soup, while Lily played with a set of wooden stacking rings on the rug nearby.

"Dad?" Toby asked softly.

Daniel walked over, sitting beside his son. "Yeah, buddy?"

"Is Grandma Evelyn ever coming back?"

Daniel took a deep breath, looking his six-year-old son straight in the eyes. "No, Toby. She and Marcus are going away for a very, very long time. They will never, ever come near you or Lily again. I promise you that on my life."

Toby nodded slowly, a massive weight visibly lifting off his small shoulders. "Good. Because she made Mommy drink the bitter tea every morning."

Daniel stopped breathing. "What did you say, Toby?"

Toby looked up innocently. "Every morning, Grandma made Mommy drink the bitter green tea. Mommy didn't like it, but Grandma said it was medicine. One day, I saw Grandma put drops from a brown bottle into it. I asked her what it was, and she pinched my arm and told me if I ever told you, she’d lock me in the dark basement."

Daniel closed his eyes, fighting back a wave of nausea. His six-year-old son had been carrying the burden of that threat for over a year, terrified that speaking up would ruin his family.

"Toby," Daniel said, taking his son's hands in his own. "You are the bravest boy in the world. You saved your sister. You saved me."

Just then, Daniel’s phone rang. It was Detective Miller.

"Daniel, you need to come back to the precinct," Miller said, his tone urgent. "Evelyn’s lawyer is attempting to post bail using a fraudulent property bond—and we just discovered Marcus had a second accomplice inside your financial firm!"
