Chapter 4 - CLARA’S VOICE FROM THE PAST

Daniel’s knees buckled. He sat down on the hardwood floor right where he was, unfolding the handwritten letter with trembling hands.
Toby sat right beside him, holding his knee, while Lily curled up in his lap, her tears finally drying, though her breathing remained hiccuped and small.
Detective Miller stood quietly nearby, gesturing for his officers to escort Evelyn downstairs into a waiting cruiser.
My dearest Daniel, Clara’s letter began.
If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and you have finally found the courage to open my blue safe. I pray with all my heart that our children are safe beside you.
Daniel, I didn't die just from an unexpected illness. Over the last six months of my life, I began feeling inexplicably weak. My hair thinned, my stomach burned, and I couldn't understand why. You were working eighty hours a week trying to secure your partnership at the firm, and I didn't want to worry you.
Three months ago, I paid for a private, independent blood panel at a clinic in South Boston without telling anyone. The results are attached to this page. I was being systematically poisoned with low doses of thallium.
Daniel let out a choked, agonized gasp. He pressed his hand over his mouth, horror washing through every nerve in his body. Clara... his sweet, vibrant Clara had been poisoned?
I started watching the house carefully, Clara’s letter continued. I realized it was Evelyn. She was putting small drops into my morning herbal teas while pretending to care for me during my pregnancies. I overheard her talking to Marcus on the patio—they planned to slowly eliminate me, comfort you in your grief, move into our home, and secure control over the family trust fund I established for Toby and Lily.
Why didn't I go straight to the police? Because I was terrified, Daniel. I didn't have solid physical proof linking the thallium bottle directly to her hands, and Marcus threatened that if I said a word, he would make sure Toby suffered an 'accident' on the playground.
I spent my final weeks placing legal locks on the children's trust fund that only you could access upon your thirty-fifth birthday or through a personal court audit. I hid this safe in the wall structure. I knew Evelyn would eventually try to steal it when her money ran dry.
Daniel, my love... listen to our children. Protect them. They are smarter and braver than anyone knows. Don't let her take our family.
Forever yours, Clara.
Tears streamed unchecked down Daniel's face, splashing onto the blue ink of Clara's handwriting.
All those months of believing Clara had simply succumbed to a tragic, mysterious autoimmune failure... it was all a monstrous lie. Evelyn hadn't come to comfort him out of love; she had invaded his home to finish stealing what she had started years ago.
"Mr. Vance?" Detective Miller asked softly, crouching down. "We found a glass vial of thallium in Marcus's glove compartment along with Clara's stolen bond certificates. The forensics team is analyzing it now."
Daniel looked up, his eyes turning from grief to pure, unrelenting steel.
"She poisoned my wife," Daniel whispered.
"We have enough evidence to charge both of them with grand larceny, child endangerment, and now... attempted capital murder," Miller confirmed.
Daniel looked down at his children. Lily looked up at him, reaching her tiny thumb to wipe a tear off her father's cheek.

"Daddy no cry," Lily whispered softly. "Mommy in the sky watching."
Daniel pulled his daughter into an embrace so tight, so full of love, that he felt the broken pieces of his heart begin to mend.
