Chapter 3 - THE SECRET IN THE SAFE

"You shouldn't have gone upstairs, Dan," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a sinister, low growl.
The casual stepbrother routine was gone. Standing at the top of the stairwell, Marcus looked like a predator backed into a corner.
Daniel instinctively pushed Toby and Lily behind him into Clara’s study, holding his arm out as a shield. "Put the poker down, Marcus. You're committing a federal crime."
"A crime?" Marcus laughed bitterly, taking a slow step forward. "My mother spent eighteen months wiping your kids' noses and cooking your meals while you moped around mourning your dead wife! You owe us!"
"Marcus, stop!" Evelyn's voice shouted from the bottom of the stairs. She hurried up three steps, her immaculate cardigan disheveled for the first time. "Daniel... listen to me, sweetheart. Don't do something we'll all regret. Marcus is just upset."
"He's threatening me in my own home, Evelyn!" Daniel shouted back, his hand reaching into his pocket, his fingers frantically gripping his smartphone to dial 911.
Before he could hit call, Marcus lunged forward, swinging the fire poker toward Daniel’s head!
Daniel reacted on pure instinct built from years of college wrestling. He ducked under the heavy brass bar, driving his shoulder straight into Marcus's midsection. Both men slammed violently against the hallway wall, knocking down a row of framed family photographs.
The glass shattered across the floor. Lily screamed from inside the study, while Toby tried to hold her tight.
Daniel wrestled Marcus to the floor, pinning his wrist against the hardwood until the heavy poker clattered away, tumbling down the staircase. Daniel slammed Marcus's arm behind his back, locking him down.
"Get off my son!" Evelyn shrieked, rushing up the stairs and grabbing a heavy ceramic vase from the hall table, raising it above Daniel's back.
"Don't touch him!" a small voice screamed.
Six-year-old Toby sprinted out of the study, holding Clara's old brass desk bell, and slammed it right against Evelyn's shin with all the force his little body could manage!
Evelyn gasped in pain, dropping the vase onto the carpet, where it smashed into pieces.
The front door slammed open downstairs.
"Police! Nobody move!" three loud voices shouted from the foyer.
Two uniformed officers and a detective bounded up the stairs, firearms drawn, having responded to the automatic bank security silent alarm Daniel’s financial firm had triggered ten minutes prior when the unauthorized transfer hit the network.
"On the ground! Both of you!" Officer Vance roared, pointing his weapon at Marcus.
Within minutes, Marcus was handcuffed and dragged down the stairs, cursing wildly. Evelyn collapsed onto the hallway bench, sobbing fake tears as she tried to claim she was an innocent bystander manipulated by her son.
The detective, a stern man named Detective Miller with sharp gray eyes, walked up to Daniel, who was holding both Lily and Toby close to his chest in the hallway.
"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said gently. "We found something in the trunk of your stepbrother's car parked around the block."
He held up a clear evidence bag. Inside was Clara's blue heirloom safe—already pried open.
"Is this yours?" Miller asked.
"It belonged to my wife," Daniel said, his hands trembling as he reached out.
"There's something inside you need to see right away," Miller said, handing him a thick yellowed envelope stamped with a legal seal from three years ago—a date prior to Clara's death.
Daniel unsealed the envelope.
