Chapter 10 - THE UNBROKEN FAMILY
One year later.
It was a bright, sunny Sunday afternoon in late August.
The entire backyard of the Vance home was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious aroma of a family barbecue. Friends, neighbors, and Clara's extended family gathered around long picnic tables covered in red-and-white checkered tablecloths.
In the center of the yard sat a large wooden picnic table where a massive birthday cake decorated with pink frosting and three glowing candles sat ready.
It was Lily’s third birthday celebration.
Toby ran around with his cousins, playing tag, his laughter ringing out clear and free across the neighborhood.
Daniel stood near the head of the table, holding a camera, capturing every smile, every laugh, and every joyful moment.
"Alright, everyone!" Daniel announced, clapping his hands. "Time for cake!"
The crowd gathered around the table, singing "Happy Birthday" in a chorus of warm, loving voices.
Lily sat proudly on Daniel’s lap, wearing a small cardboard princess crown, her bright teardrop eyes sparkling under the warm sun. Her gold pendant caught the light like a small star against her dress.
"Make a wish, baby girl," Daniel whispered in her ear.
Lily leaned forward, blew out all three candles in one big huff, and slammed her tiny hands together—not in fear, but in a joyful clap that made everyone cheer!
