Chapter 9 - THE HUSBAND WHO KNEW EVERYTHING
Adrian was waiting in the hospital lobby.
He stood the moment Elena approached.
“How is Noah?”
Elena handed him a printed image from the security recording.
His face hardened.
“You stole the envelope.”
“Elena, listen to me.”
“You disabled the camera.”
“I can explain.”
“You let your sister frame me.”
“I did not know she was going to put the necklace in your suitcase.”
“But you promised to erase the footage.”
Adrian looked around the crowded lobby.
“Not here.”
Elena stepped closer.
“You lost the right to choose where we discuss your lies.”
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Victoria said the necklace belonged to her.”
“She wanted to recover family property without another lawsuit.”
“You believed that?”
“I believed she would enter your room, take documents, and leave.”
“You gave her permission to search my belongings?”
“I was trying to find the amendment.”
Elena stared at him.
“The amendment that could take my house away.”
“I wanted to know what Grandmother had done.”
“You opened the envelope.”
“What did it say?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“I only read part of it.”
“What did it say?”
“It said the estate would transfer under certain conditions.”
“To whom?”
“Victoria.”
Elena felt the betrayal settle inside her.
Adrian continued quickly.
“But only if you were convicted of theft, fraud, or financial abuse against the Hartley family.”
The entire plan became clear.
Victoria needed Elena accused of stealing the necklace.
The forged bank transfer created evidence of fraud.
The missing jewelry created a pattern.
Once Elena was convicted, Victoria could claim the estate.
“You both planned this.”
“No.”
“I took the envelope because I wanted to destroy it.”
“Then where is it?”
Adrian hesitated.
“Victoria took it from me.”
Elena laughed without humor.
“You expect me to believe you betrayed me to protect me?”
“I made mistakes.”
“You committed crimes.”
Adrian reached for her.
She stepped away.
“My attorney will contact you.”
“Elena, please.”
“My marriage ended the moment I watched you leave that vault.”
She walked toward the exit.
Adrian called after her.
“There is something you do not know about your grandmother.”
Elena stopped but did not turn around.
“She did not leave you the estate because she loved you.”
“She left it because she was afraid of what your mother discovered.”
Elena slowly faced him.
“My mother died when I was nine.”
