Chapter 1 - THE FOOTAGE ON THE SCREEN

The diamond necklace lay on the marble floor between Elena Hartley’s open suitcase and Victoria Hartley’s polished black heels.
Dozens of guests stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Hartley estate.
Victoria pointed at the necklace with a triumphant smile.
“There it is.”
“I knew you stole it.”
Elena stared at the glittering diamonds.
She had never seen the necklace inside her suitcase.
Her dresses, private letters, makeup, and personal documents had been thrown across the floor.
Victoria had searched everything while the guests watched.
Elena slowly lifted her eyes.
“You put that necklace there.”
Victoria laughed.
“Of course you would say that.”
“She has been stealing from this family for months.”
A nervous murmur traveled through the ballroom.
Elena’s husband, Adrian, stood near the fireplace.
He looked pale, but he said nothing.
That silence hurt Elena more than Victoria’s accusation.
Victoria stepped closer.
“My mother wore this necklace on her wedding day.”
“It disappeared three weeks after Elena moved into this house.”
Elena’s hands tightened.
“This is my house.”
“My grandmother left it to me.”
Victoria’s smile faded for half a second.
Then the television above the fireplace suddenly turned on.
The Hartley family portrait disappeared from the screen.
Grainy security footage replaced it.
Every guest turned toward the television.
Victoria’s face lost all color.
The recording showed Elena leaving her bedroom earlier that afternoon.
Ten minutes later, Victoria entered the room.
She was holding the diamond necklace in her right hand.
The guests watched her open Elena’s suitcase.
They watched her push the necklace beneath a folded silk dress.
They watched her close the suitcase and quietly leave.
“No.”
Victoria rushed toward the television.
“Turn it off.”
“Someone edited that footage.”
Elena did not move.
“The system automatically saves every recording to an encrypted server.”
“No one edited anything.”
Guest after guest stepped away from Victoria.
Adrian finally spoke.
“Victoria, tell me that is not you.”
Victoria looked at her brother.
For the first time that evening, she seemed afraid.
Elena walked toward her.
“You lied long enough.”
“You humiliated me in my own home.”
“You searched my belongings in front of everyone.”
“You tried to have me arrested.”
Elena pointed toward the entrance.
“Leave my house.”
Victoria’s fear changed into fury.
“You think that video proves anything?”
“It proves you planted the necklace.”
Victoria leaned closer and lowered her voice.
“You have no idea what else is hidden in this house.”
Before Elena could respond, red and blue lights flashed through the ballroom windows.
Police cars were coming up the driveway.
Victoria smiled again.
May you like
“I called them before the party began.”
“And they are not here for the necklace.”
