Chapter 20 - THE REAL THIEF

Benjamin survived the gunshot.

Victoria claimed she had fired to protect Elena.

Detective Mason arrested her for carrying an illegal weapon and interfering with the operation.

However, the district attorney later ruled that the shooting could be considered defense of another person.

Victoria was released again.

The explosive devices were removed.

The original amendment was authenticated.

Benjamin’s forged page became the foundation of the fraud case against him.

Adrian surrendered control of Hartley Development.

He agreed to testify about the stolen funds, the disabled cameras, and Victoria’s involvement in the jewelry scheme.

Catherine pleaded guilty to tampering with Margaret’s medication.

She insisted she had wanted a confession, not a death.

Elena visited her once before sentencing.

Catherine sat behind thick glass.

“Do you hate me?”

Elena considered the question.

“I hate what you did.”

“That is not the same answer.”

“No.”

Catherine’s eyes filled with tears.

“You still believe there is something worth saving in me.”

“I believe our family has buried enough people.”

The stolen jewelry was recovered from three private collectors.

Marcus Bell entered witness protection after identifying the lenders who had financed Victoria.

The blue ledger became evidence in investigations involving decades of corruption.

Elena sold Hartley Development’s remaining assets to repay employees and creditors.

She filed for divorce one day after her thirty-fifth birthday.

Adrian signed the papers without contest.

On the morning he left the estate, he placed his wedding ring on the kitchen table.

“I did love you.”

Elena looked at him.

“Love without truth becomes another kind of theft.”

Adrian left without answering.

Six months after the gala, Elena reopened the estate as a foundation for victims of financial abuse and family violence.

The east garden became a memorial for Anna Cross, Isabel, Caroline, Margaret, and every person destroyed by the Hartley secrets.

Victoria did not attend the dedication.

She had disappeared two weeks earlier.

Police believed she had fled the country.

On the evening of the ceremony, Elena returned to her bedroom.

A package waited on the bed.

There was no postage label.

Inside was the diamond necklace Victoria had planted in her suitcase.

A small flash drive rested beneath it.

Elena inserted the drive into her computer.

A final security recording appeared.

The timestamp came from three months before the gala.

The video showed Adrian entering the vault.

He was not alone.

Victoria followed him.

They removed several jewelry boxes and passed them to Marcus Bell.

Then a third person entered.

Elena leaned closer to the screen.

The woman wore a dark coat and carried the original blue ledger.

It was Catherine.

The three of them spoke for several minutes.

There was no audio.

Just before leaving, Adrian turned toward the camera.

He held up a handwritten sign.

Benjamin is watching us.

Victoria displayed a second message.

We are gathering proof.

Catherine raised the final sign.

Elena can never know until he is arrested.

Elena stared at the screen.

Adrian had lied.

Victoria had lied.

Catherine had lied.

But perhaps their greatest betrayal had not been stealing from her.

Perhaps they had been working together to protect her.

The footage continued.

A fourth figure appeared inside the vault.

Elena expected Benjamin.

It was Detective Mason.

He accepted the missing envelope from Adrian.

Then Mason looked directly into the camera and switched it off.

Elena’s phone rang.

The caller identification displayed Mason’s name.

She answered without speaking.

His voice was calm.

“You watched the recording.”

Elena gripped the phone.

“You were part of it.”

“I was part of something much older.”

“Where is Victoria?”

“She is alive.”

“Where?”

Mason paused.

“Standing outside your front door.”

The doorbell rang.

Elena checked the security monitor.

Victoria stood on the porch.

Her face was bruised.

Her clothes were covered in dirt.

She held a little girl’s hand.

The child looked no older than eight.

She had Elena’s dark eyes.

Victoria lifted her face toward the camera.

Then she held up a cardboard sign.

Your mother survived the crash.

This is her daughter.
