Chapter 6 - THE PLANNED MARRIAGE
Brandon and I met at a charity gala seven years ago.
At least, that was my version.
His messages with Thomas showed he knew my name months earlier.
Thomas:
ROBERT’S DAUGHTER WILL ATTEND.
Brandon:
I KNOW.
Thomas:
DO NOT RUSH.
Brandon:
SHE TRUSTS SLOWLY.
My stomach turned.
He studied me.
He knew where I worked.
What charities I supported.
Which mutual friend could introduce us.
The romance was engineered.
Goal:
Determine whether Brandon married me purely for shares.
Obstacle:
Our marriage contained real years.
Trips.
Arguments.
Illness.
Ordinary mornings.
Manipulation does not automatically make every feeling fake.
Then Brandon’s journal became evidence.
He wrote early entries about getting close to me.
Strategic.
Calculated.
Then later entries changed.
EMMA LAUGHED AT MY TERRIBLE COFFEE.
I FORGOT WHY I WAS DOING THIS FOR A WHILE.
Messy.
Human.
He may have started with motive and developed real attachment.
That did not erase betrayal.
Then one entry:
MARGARET KNOWS.
Date:
Three months before our wedding.
She discovered Brandon’s connection with Thomas and his plan around me.
What did she do?
She offered him a deal.
Marry me.
Stay loyal to her.
She would let him inherit Carter Heritage eventually.
He accepted.
Double agent between mother and biological father.
Then Information Twist:
Robert knew the marriage was planned too.
His emails to David Sloan:
Brandon is circling Emma.
I could stop it.
I am waiting to see which side he chooses.
My father used me as a test.
That hurt almost as much as Brandon.
Everyone around me thought manipulation was strategy.
Nobody asked me.
Then Rebecca found the reward.
Robert changed his will one month before the wedding.
He placed my shares into an independent trust that Brandon could never control through marriage.
My father anticipated the trap.
But he never told me.
Then another email:
If Emma chooses him after knowing the truth, I will respect it.
He planned to tell me.
When?
After the wedding rehearsal.
He died two weeks before.
That made his death timing more significant.
Margaret knew he intended disclosure.
Brandon knew too.
Marcus and Serena maybe not.
Then an audio file from Robert’s study surfaced.
Robert and Brandon arguing.
Robert:
“You tell her, or I will.”
Brandon:
“Give me until Friday.”
Robert:
“You had seven years.”
Brandon:
“If she learns how we met, I lose her.”
Robert:
“That is her decision.”
Then Brandon said:
“Margaret will destroy all of us.”
Robert answered:
“Then let her.”
This was the last recorded conversation between them.
Two days later, Robert died.
Brandon had motive to delay disclosure.
But the recording also suggested he feared Margaret.
Then a timestamped message from Brandon to Serena the night before Dad died:
GET MOM OUT OF TOWN TOMORROW.
Why?
If Brandon planned murder, moving Margaret away could protect her or himself.
But Serena answered:
TOO LATE. SHE ALREADY KNOWS ROBERT HAS THE DRIVE.
The USB.
Dad’s backup.
The same drive I now had.
Robert had created it before death.
Margaret knew.
Then Brandon replied:
THEN ROBERT IS DEAD.
Not “might die.”
Not “in danger.”
Dead.
Before the murder happened.
He knew what Margaret would do.
He predicted it.
