Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR’S MONEY

Dr. Ethan Pike received $600,000 from Carter Heritage Holdings three weeks after my father died.
Not salary.
Not consulting.
Payment memo:
PROPERTY ACQUISITION.
Pike owned no property connected to the family.
Rebecca Sloan, David’s daughter and now my attorney, traced the funds through two shell companies.
The money ended in a medical real-estate trust.
Pike used it to purchase a private clinic.
So yes.
He had motive.
But then another type of evidence broke the simple theory.
A photograph.
Taken at the clinic opening.
Margaret beside Pike.
Brandon behind them.
And my father.
Alive.
Date:
Eight months before his death.
Robert knew Pike personally.
The men were not enemies.
Then David admitted something he had withheld.
My father invested in Pike’s clinic too.
Why?
Because they were working on a project together.
Medical fraud investigation.
Robert believed Pike’s clinic was laundering money through false patient billing.
Pike agreed to help expose the network.
So why later kill him?
Maybe he switched sides.
Or maybe the medication chart had been altered after the fact.
Forensic hospital IT found exactly that.
The fivefold dosage entry was edited two days after Robert died.
User credentials:
Dr. Pike.
But login location:
Carter villa.
My home.
I had lived there four years ago too.
Someone accessed Pike’s medical credentials from inside our house.
Who?
Home router logs were gone.
But my old laptop backup contained device history.
One unknown computer connected that night.
Device name:
MARCUS-MBP.
Marcus Carter.
Brandon’s younger brother.
I had almost forgotten Marcus was staying with us that month after a breakup.
Suddenly a new person entered the timeline.
Marcus denied touching my computer.
Then a message thread contradicted him.
Marcus to Margaret:
PIKE’S FILE IS FIXED.
Margaret:
GOOD. ROBERT’S DEATH MUST LOOK CLINICAL.
Reward.
The medication record was fake.
Pike may not have changed the dose at all.
Then what killed Dad?
Autopsy report:
Acute heart failure.
No toxicology beyond standard screening.
David had preserved a blood sample through private legal request because Robert feared poisoning.
Independent retesting found a rare compound.
Digitalis derivative.
Not prescribed.
Somebody poisoned him.
Dr. Pike’s medical record was altered to hide it.
Marcus handled the digital cover.
Margaret directed him.
Brandon forged my family authorization.
But who administered the poison?
Then the next Information Bomb came from the nurse schedule.
Robert’s final meal was brought by a family visitor.
Name:
Emma Carter.
Again.
Someone used my identity twice that night.
Visitor signature.
My name.
But security-badge photo attached to the visitor pass showed a woman with brown hair and my general build.
Not me.
Face partially turned.
I stared at the image.
Rebecca enhanced it.
The woman wore a bracelet I recognized.
Serena Carter.
Brandon’s sister.
Serena had gone into my father’s room pretending to be me.
The conspiracy was no longer Margaret and her sons.
The entire Carter family had played a role.
May you like
But Serena’s reason for entering the room would change what I believed about the poison itself.
CTA: Serena admitted she carried my father’s final meal into the hospital, but what she claimed she secretly removed from his tray suggested someone else had already tried to kill him before she arrived.
