Chapter 2 - THE SIGNATURE

I woke up in St. Matthew’s Hospital with three fractured ribs, a dislocated shoulder, a concussion, and one question.

Who signed the order?

David Sloan sat beside the window.

He had recovered the USB before paramedics arrived.

Brandon and Margaret were questioned but not arrested.

Not yet.

Brandon claimed I slipped.

Margaret claimed David was manipulating me because of an old inheritance dispute.

They were already building their defense.

David opened a file.

Four years earlier, when my father Robert was admitted to St. Matthew’s, doctors requested immediate authorization for an experimental cardiac procedure.

The family representative declined.

Signature:

Emma Carter.

Mine.

Except I had been in Chicago that night.

Three hundred miles away.

I never signed anything.

The hospital scanned a driver’s license with the form.

My license.

Or a copy of it.

How?

Brandon had access.

We were married.

The assumption changed immediately.

Margaret may have planned something, but someone had impersonated me.

Then David showed me a video still.

Hospital parking garage.

Brandon’s car.

Timestamp:

10:42 p.m.

The night Dad died.

Brandon told me he had been home.

He lied.

Goal:

Prove Brandon entered the hospital.

Obstacle:

Security footage inside the building had been deleted after ninety days.

Then the first new evidence type arrived.

Parking-payment records.

Brandon’s card paid for three hours.

He was there.

When I confronted him through police counsel, he admitted it.

“I went because Robert called me.”

“Why?”

“He wanted to talk privately.”

“About what?”

“Money.”

Convenient.

Then David recovered my father’s phone backup.

Final outgoing message:

BRANDON, COME ALONE. EMMA CANNOT KNOW YET.

My father had invited him.

That complicated everything.

Why meet the son-in-law secretly?

Then the reward.

A deleted draft email from Robert to David.

Subject:

MARGARET VANCE.

Robert wrote:

I have confirmed she is moving money through Carter Heritage. Brandon knows more than he admits.

So Dad had been investigating Margaret before death.

Brandon knew.

Then Information Twist:

Robert did not die immediately after Brandon left.

Nurse records showed he remained conscious for forty-seven minutes.

Someone entered afterward.

Visitor name:

Dr. Ethan Pike.

Not unusual.

He was Robert’s physician.

But Pike was not scheduled that night.

And the medication chart changed after his arrival.

A cardiac drug dose increased fivefold.

Authorized by Dr. Pike.

Robert died twenty-one minutes later.

Brandon had forged my refusal form.

Pike changed the medication.

Margaret controlled the money.

Three roles.

One death.

Then David found the final note Robert entered into his secure cloud account:

If I die tonight, do not trust Brandon’s explanation.

Not “Brandon killed me.”

His explanation.

Meaning Dad expected Brandon to lie.

And Brandon already had.

The first signature tied my husband to the cover-up, but the medication record pointed toward Dr. Pike as the person who physically caused my father’s death.

May you like

I needed Pike’s motive next, because doctors do not risk prison for somebody else’s family money without getting something in return.

CTA: The hospital chart made Dr. Pike look like the killer, but his bank records showed Margaret had paid him for something that had nothing to do with medicine.
