CHAPTER 18: TALLER THAN THE SHADOWS

The night was clear and cool. Millions of icy stars covered the Texas sky, reflected perfectly on the dark surface of the lake below.

Lily stood by the screen door, looking out at the water, wrapped in a comfortable wool sweater.

I stepped up beside her, wrapping my arm around her shoulders. She leaned into my side, warm, strong, and completely secure.

"What are you looking at, Lilybug?" I asked, using her childhood nickname for the first time in years.

Lily smiled, looking up at the endless sea of stars above us.

"I used to look at the sky from that penthouse balcony and feel so small," she said, her voice filled with a deep, unbroken peace. "I thought the world was too big for someone like me."

She took my hand, intertwining her fingers with mine.

"And now?" I asked softly.

Lily looked out at the vast horizon, her eyes shining with pure, unburdened freedom.

"Now I know the sky isn't a ceiling, Dad," she whispered. "It's just the beginning."

We stood together on the porch, watching the stars, two survivors who had walked through the fire, broken the chains of control, and found their way back to the light.

Victoria was gone, buried under the weight of her own lies.
