CHAPTER 11: WORDS WITHOUT POWER

I broke the seal and unfolded the three pages of lined paper. Victoria’s handwriting was thin, precise, and sharp—the same script she used to write rigid schedules for Lily when I was away on business trips.

Ethan,

I am writing this because the court requires me to demonstrate accountability, but I know in my heart that what happened in that apartment was a tragic misunderstanding. I only wanted order. I only wanted us to be a normal family.

Your daughter was distant from the day I moved in. She rejected every attempt I made to guide her. You chose her tears over my devotion. You allowed her emotional instability to destroy our marriage and ruin my reputation in this city.

I lost my home. I lost my standing. I lost everything because you let a child manipulate you.

I stopped reading. My jaw was clenched so tight my teeth burned.

I looked up at Lily.

Three years ago, hearing those words would have sent her spiraling into a panic attack, hiding in her closet, crying until she hyperventilated.

Today, Lily simply let out a small, quiet breath. A faint, sad smile touched her lips.

"She still thinks tears are weapons, doesn't she?" Lily said quietly.

"She doesn't know any other way to live, Lily," I answered.

Lily took the letter from my hands, walked over to the desk, and dropped it into the shredder. The mechanical hum filled the room for three seconds, reducing Victoria’s final manipulation into useless, thin white strips.

"She didn't write that to apologize, Dad," Lily said, looking at me with absolute clarity. "She wrote it because she's still sitting in that cold room, waiting for someone to validate her lies. We don't have to give her our time anymore."
