CHAPTER 4: The Exchange at the Iron Gate

CHAPTER 4: The Exchange at the Iron Gate

The midnight air was thick with fog at the abandoned industrial docks of the city's old harbor—the neutral ground chosen by Julian Sterling for the exchange. The rusted iron framework of decaying shipping cranes towered over the black water like skeletal giants.

Adrian Vale stood alone beneath the flickering light of a single streetlamp. In his hand, he held a sleek leather briefcase containing the fully executed, legally binding transfer documents for Vale International. He had surrendered everything. His wealth, his power, his mansions, and his status—all wiped away with a single stroke of his pen. To the rest of the world, he was now a bankrupt man. To himself, he was simply a father.

A pair of bright headlights sliced through the fog. A heavy armored SUV drove slowly down the pier, stopping twenty feet away from Adrian.

The doors opened, and Julian Sterling stepped out, wearing a flawless cashmere overcoat, a smug, triumphant grin plastered across his face. Behind him, two armed guards held the little girl. Her small feet were still bare, shivering against the damp concrete, but her eyes were wide, fixed entirely on Adrian.

"Look at you, Adrian," Julian mocked, gesturing to the desolate surroundings. "The great Adrian Vale, brought to his knees by a gutter rat in a dirty dress. It’s poetic, really. You lost the woman, and now you’ve lost your crown."

"The papers are in the briefcase, Julian," Adrian said, his voice dead and emotionless. "Every share, every patent, every piece of real estate. Take it. Just give me my daughter."

Julian signaled his guard, who stepped forward and grabbed the briefcase from Adrian’s hand. Julian opened it, carefully inspecting the corporate seals and the authenticated signatures under a flashlight. Satisfied, he closed the case with a sharp click.

"A pleasure doing business with you, outcast," Julian sneered. He gave a slight nod to the guard holding the girl. The guard shoved her forward, causing her to stumble into the cold mud.

"Daddy!" the little girl cried out, the word escaping her lips instinctively as she scrambled to her feet and ran toward Adrian.

Adrian dropped to his knees, catching her in his arms, pulling her tattered frame into his chest with a desperate, suffocating grip. He didn't care about the mud, the cold, or the loss of his billions. He had her.

"I've got you, sweetheart," Adrian whispered into her messy hair, his tears falling hot against her shoulder. "I've got you. You're safe."

May you like

"How touching," Julian laughed, stepping back into the safety of his SUV. "Enjoy your poverty, Adrian. You two deserve each other."
