CHAPTER 3: The Ghost of the Past

CHAPTER 3: The Ghost of the Past

The sub-basement security hub of the Vale Estate hummed with artificial cooling fans and the frantic clicking of keyboards. Adrian stood over the central monitoring console, his formal tuxedo jacket torn and discarded, his white shirt stained with blood and soot. His fingers tightly gripped the half-heart silver pendant around his neck, his mind spiraling back twenty years.

His lost love, Elena, had vanished without a trace exactly two decades ago, just days after they had privately composed that haunting melody together. Adrian had spent millions searching for her, but every trail had gone cold, leading him to believe she had been killed. Now, a child had walked into his home, playing that exact secret song, carrying her blood and her legacy.

"We’ve intercepted the security feed from the northern parking garage, sir," Thomas announced, typing rapidly.

On the primary monitor, a grainy black-and-white video showed the tactical operatives sprinting toward an unmarked armored transport vehicle. The little girl was bound and blindfolded, but she was fighting back with everything she had, biting the arm of her captor.

"Zoom in on the vehicle's registry!" Adrian demanded.

The digital image enhanced, revealing a highly secure, corporate-encrypted transport plate. Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized that emblem. It belonged to Apex Biotech Industries—a powerful, shadow-cloaked conglomerate owned by Julian Sterling, Adrian’s most ruthless business rival and the man who had desperately tried to buy out Vale International for the past decade.

"Julian," Adrian whispered, his voice shaking with a cold, murderous realization. "He didn't just target my company. He took Elena twenty years ago. He kept her from me."

Before Adrian could order an assault team, his personal encrypted phone rang. The caller ID was restricted. Adrian answered it instantly, pressing the device to his ear.

"Adrian," a smooth, chillingly familiar voice chuckled through the speaker. It was Julian Sterling. "The girl has quite a gift, doesn't she? She inherits her mother’s touch on the keys. And, unfortunately for you, she also inherits her mother’s unique genetic structure."

"If you touch her, Julian, I will burn your entire empire to the ground with my bare hands," Adrian growled, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the desk.

"You won't do anything of the sort, Adrian," Julian replied smoothly. "Twenty years ago, Elena discovered something very valuable inside our research facilities, and she ran away with it—and with my child in her womb. Yes, Adrian. Elena was pregnant when she escaped my compound. For twenty years, she hid from me, teaching that wretched little girl your stupid song as a beacon. But now, the asset is back in my possession."

"She is my daughter, Julian!" Adrian shouted.
