CHAPTER 2: The Sound of Shadows

CHAPTER 2: The Sound of Shadows

The darkness inside the grand ballroom was absolute, a suffocating blanket that instantly snuffed out the heaven of the wealthy. The haunting remnants of the piano melody seemed to hang in the freezing air for a split second before being violently shattered by the sound of breaking crystal and panicked screams.

"Take the girl. NOW."

The deep, command-structured voice did not come from the entrance. It echoed from the heavy velvet curtains behind the grand piano stage. Adrian Vale’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. The realization that this little girl was his own flesh and blood—the daughter of his long-lost love, carrying the matching piece of his broken heart—had barely registered before the threat of losing her consumed his entire being.

"Security! Engage backup generators! Lock down the perimeter!" Adrian roared, his voice cutting through the chaotic din of screeching guests and overturning tables.

He lunged forward blindly into the pitch black, his hands outstretched toward the piano bench where the girl had been sitting just moments before. His expensive leather shoes slipped on spilled champagne, but he forced his balance, relying on his intimate knowledge of his own estate's layout. His fingers scraped against the cold, polished mahogany of the grand piano. He reached over the keys, searching the bench.

Empty.

"Please! Let me go!" a tiny, terrified voice cried out from the darkness, several feet to his left.

"Hold her mouth! Move to the service elevator!" a rough voice grunted in response.

Adrian’s vision began to adjust slightly to the gloom, aided by the faint, eerie green glow of the emergency exit signs. He saw the silhouette of a large, burly man in tactical gear hoisting the small, barefoot girl over his shoulder. Another masked operative stood guard, a silenced submachine gun pointed directly into the crowd.

"Get your hands off my daughter!" Adrian snarled.

Abandoning all caution, the billionaire threw his entire weight into the armed operative. The collision was brutal. The guard hadn't expected a high-society billionaire to fight with the raw, unhinged ferocity of a street brawler. The gun fired blindly into the ceiling, showering them with sparks and plaster as they crashed to the marble floor. Adrian struck out with his fist, fueled by twenty years of unresolved grief and a sudden, primal instinct to protect his child.

The generator suddenly kicked in with a mechanical groan. The crystal chandeliers flickered back to life, bathing the ruined ballroom in a harsh, blinding glare.

The bright light revealed a scene of absolute devastation. Wealthy guests were cowering beneath tables, their diamonds covered in dust. The operative Adrian was wrestling with managed to plant a heavy boot into Adrian's chest, kicking the billionaire backward across the slick floor.

Adrian gasped for air, looking up just in time to see the first operative disappearing through the heavy brass service doors, the little girl still trapped in his grip. The heavy metal doors slammed shut, and the sound of a electronic lock clicking into place echoed like a gunshot.

"Mr. Vale!" his chief of security, a towering man named Thomas, rushed to his side, helping Adrian to his feet. "Are you alright? The police are on their way."

"I don't care about the police, Thomas!" Adrian screamed, grabbing the security chief by his lapels, his eyes wild with terror and rage. "They have my daughter! Override the service elevator locks! If those men leave this property with that girl, you will answer to me!"
"She is a walking database, Adrian," Julian corrected coldly. "Elena encoded the digital blueprint of our proprietary neurological serum into the girl’s DNA profile before she died last year. I don't care about your sentimentality. If you want to see the child alive again, you will sign over all controlling shares of Vale International to Apex Biotech by midnight tonight. I will send a courier to your estate with the transfer documents. If the signature isn't verified, the girl disappears... permanently, just like her mother."

The line went dead. Adrian stared at the blank screen, his world spinning. He had twelve hours to choose between the global corporate empire he had spent his life building, or the daughter he had only just discovered.
