Chapter 4: The Last Door

Chapter 4: The Last Door
Six months later.
The mansion had been sold.
The ballroom where so many powerful people once celebrated had become an evidence warehouse.
Damian Blackwood sat alone inside a maximum-security prison awaiting trial on dozens of federal charges.
Many of the guests who laughed that night had accepted plea deals.
Others lost everything.
Some would never recover.
As for me...
The scar beneath my lip remained.
I chose not to hide it.
Whenever reporters asked why I refused cosmetic surgery, I always gave the same answer.
"Because healing isn't about pretending nothing happened."
"It's about making sure it never happens again."
My father eventually retired for real.
One afternoon we stood together overlooking the ocean outside his home.
He smiled.
"You know..."
"When you called me that night..."
"I wasn't afraid."
I raised an eyebrow.
"No?"
He shook his head.
"I was afraid I'd arrive too late."
For a moment neither of us spoke.
Then I looked toward the horizon.
"So..."
"Was justice worth it?"
He smiled softly.
"No."
"Justice isn't something that's worth it."
"It's something people deserve."
Weeks later, Damian's conviction became national news.
His empire collapsed.
His victims received restitution.
And the security footage from that ballroom became mandatory training material in law schools and corporate ethics programs across the country.
People often asked me about the night every door locked.
They always assumed the steel barriers were the most terrifying part.
They were wrong.
The scariest moment wasn't when the exits disappeared.
It was when every powerful person in that room realized they could no longer run from the truth.
Because some doors are built to keep danger out.
And a very rare few...

Are built to make sure justice stays in.
