Chapter 3: The Pulse That Changed Everything

The ambulance had not yet entered the chapel.

Time seemed suspended.

Dr. Harris continued monitoring Emily's pulse with unwavering concentration while another hand rested lightly near her chest, searching for any sign of spontaneous breathing.

Daniel refused to leave her side.

He brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face exactly as he had done countless times before leaving for work.

His hands still shook.

Not from fear anymore.

From hope.

Hope felt almost more terrifying than grief.

Behind them, relatives quietly moved the flowers away from the coffin to give the medical team room to work.

No one had been asked.

They simply understood.

The atmosphere had changed.

Not because certainty had arrived.

Because uncertainty had returned.

An aunt who had earlier called Daniel irrational slowly approached him.

Her voice barely escaped above a whisper.

"I'm sorry."

Daniel looked at her but said nothing.

There would be time for apologies later.

If later came at all.

The funeral home's front doors burst open.

Paramedics hurried inside carrying emergency equipment.

Dr. Harris immediately summarized his findings.

"Female. Twenty-nine. Eight months pregnant. Extremely weak carotid pulse. Minimal spontaneous respiration. Immediate transport."

The lead paramedic nodded without hesitation.

Monitoring equipment appeared within seconds.

Daniel stepped back only when gently guided aside.

His eyes never left Emily.

A faint electronic tone finally echoed through the chapel as the monitor searched for a signal.

Everyone waited.

No one dared speak.

Even the soft sobbing had disappeared.

The silence was heavier than before.

Not the silence of mourning.

The silence of people witnessing the impossible.

As Emily was carefully prepared for transport, Daniel remained beside the coffin, unable to look away.

The polished wood that had nearly become her final resting place now stood open behind her.

A few minutes earlier it had represented the end of every dream they had shared.

Now it represented a single unanswered question.

Would this fragile pulse become another heartbeat...

Or merely the last?

The paramedics rushed toward the exit.

Daniel followed without hesitation.

The relatives parted silently, creating a path.

Some prayed.

Some cried.

Others simply stared.

The answer had not yet come.

The future of Emily and her unborn child remained unknown.

The ambulance doors had not even closed.

And that uncertainty was more powerful than any farewell the funeral home had ever witnessed.
