Chapter 1:He arrived just in time to say goodbye, but a tiny movement in the coffin changed everything.

The funeral home had already fallen into the quiet rhythm of farewell.
Rows of white lilies filled the chapel with a faint fragrance while muffled sobs echoed beneath the high ceiling. At the center of the room rested a polished mahogany coffin. Its lid remained closed as relatives gathered around it, each preparing themselves for the final moment they had dreaded all day.
Inside lay Emily Carter.
Only twenty-nine years old.
Eight months pregnant.
Everyone believed that both mother and unborn child had passed away together.
The minister nodded gently toward two family members.
"It is time."
They stepped forward and slowly lifted the heavy coffin lid.
Before anyone could lower it again for the final farewell, the chapel doors burst open.
"No!"
A desperate voice shattered the silence.
Daniel Carter stumbled into the room.
His beard had grown wild after months working on a remote construction site overseas. Dust still stained his torn jacket. His suitcase slipped from his trembling hand as he ran straight toward the coffin.
"Stop... don't close it!"
Ignoring every shocked face around him, Daniel shoved one hand beneath the descending lid and forced it upward.
The wood groaned.
Several relatives instinctively stepped back.
Without saying another word, he leaned over the coffin and wrapped both arms around Emily's lifeless body.
His forehead rested against hers.
"I made it... I'm here..."
Tears soaked the white fabric covering her shoulders.
Months earlier he had promised he would return before their daughter was born.
Instead, he had arrived for a funeral.
The unbearable guilt crushed every breath from his lungs.
His trembling hand slowly slid across Emily's swollen belly.
One final goodbye.
One final touch.
Then...
His fingers froze.
A tiny movement.
So small that it almost felt imaginary.
Daniel pulled back.
His breathing stopped.
His palm remained pressed against her stomach.
Another faint flutter.
Not from Emily.
From beneath her belly.
His eyes widened.
"The baby..."
No one answered.
He pressed both hands against her abdomen.
Again.
A tiny kick.
Weak.
Almost impossible to notice.
Yet undeniably real.
"The baby moved!"
The words echoed through the funeral hall.
No one reacted at first.
The relatives exchanged uneasy glances.
Daniel had traveled for nearly twenty straight hours after hearing of his wife's death. Everyone knew he had barely slept.
An elderly aunt wiped away tears.
"Oh, Daniel..."
Another relative quietly whispered,
"He's in shock."
Daniel ignored them.
"It moved again! Please! Feel it!"
He reached toward his brother-in-law.
Nobody approached.
Instead, two men carefully grabbed his shoulders.
"Come with us."
"No!"
"It wasn't my imagination!"
His voice cracked with desperation.
"I felt her!"
The men gently pulled him away from the coffin.
Daniel fought to return.
"Please! Someone check her!"
He stretched one arm toward Emily while struggling against their grip.
Another woman covered her mouth.
"He can't accept she's gone..."
The room filled once more with crying.
Only this time...
The grief mixed with uncomfortable pity.
Everyone believed the same thing.
Daniel's mind had broken beneath unbearable loss.
At the rear of the chapel, a tall man in a black suit slowly raised his head.
Dr. Samuel Harris had attended only to pay his respects.
For several seconds he simply watched.
Not the husband.
The coffin.
Not the shouting.
The reactions.
Something about the panic felt strangely genuine.
He stepped forward.
Nobody noticed until he was standing beside Emily.
"Excuse me."
The grieving family fell silent.
The doctor gently reached toward Emily's neck.
Two fingers rested lightly against her carotid artery.
He waited.
Five seconds.
Nothing.
Then...
His eyes narrowed.
He adjusted the angle of his fingertips.
Waited again.
One.
Two.
Three.
There.
Barely noticeable.
A pulse.
Slow.
Extremely weak.
Almost disappearing beneath his fingertips.
Dr. Harris looked up.
"Wait."
The single word froze the entire room.
He checked again.
Longer this time.
His calm expression disappeared.
"Call an ambulance."
Nobody moved.
The silence became unbearable.
Daniel had stopped struggling.
His entire body stood frozen.
The doctor never lifted his fingers from Emily's neck.
His voice rose with unmistakable urgency.

"She still has a pulse
For several endless seconds...
No one remembered how to breathe.
