Chapter 2: Between Life and Death

Shock spread across the funeral hall faster than grief ever had.
Only moments earlier, every face had accepted the certainty of death. Now no one knew what to believe.
Daniel broke free from the relatives holding him and rushed back to the coffin.
"Emily!"
He gripped the edge of the polished wood, his eyes fixed on the doctor's face instead of his wife's.
"You felt it too?"
Dr. Harris didn't answer immediately.
He continued counting beneath his breath, measuring each impossibly weak heartbeat.
"It's irregular," he finally said. "Very weak... but it's there."
A younger relative fumbled for a phone with shaking hands.
"Call emergency services!"
Another stood frozen.
"What if..."
He couldn't finish the sentence.
The possibility that they had nearly buried a living woman was too horrifying to speak aloud.
Dr. Harris leaned closer, listening near Emily's mouth.
"There isn't enough visible breathing."
He carefully tilted her head.
Again he searched.
Again he found the faintest sign of life.
Daniel reached for Emily's cold hand.
"I knew it..."
His voice broke.
"I knew she wasn't gone."
The doctor looked at him.
"No."
Daniel stared back.
"You didn't know."
"You noticed something everyone else missed."
Those words carried no blame.
Only truth.
Around them, guilt settled over the grieving relatives.
No one had ignored Emily intentionally.
No one had wished for this.
Every person in the room had trusted what they had been told.
Death certificates.
Hospital procedures.
Professional conclusions.
No one imagined they could be wrong.
An elderly woman quietly collapsed into a chair, unable to stop crying.
"I kissed her goodbye..."
Another whispered,
"We almost..."
Again, nobody completed the sentence.
No one wanted to imagine what would have happened if Daniel had arrived even one minute later.
Outside, the distant sound of a siren slowly grew louder.
Daniel remained beside the coffin.
His thumb gently stroked Emily's fingers.
"They're still cold."
Dr. Harris nodded.
"Keep talking to her."
"Can she hear me?"
"I don't know."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I'm here, Emily."
No answer.
"I came home."
Silence.
"You don't have to wait anymore."
A tear slipped down his face.
The relatives stood completely still.
Earlier they had pitied a grieving husband who refused reality.
Now they watched the same man become the only reason hope still existed.
The doctor checked Emily's pulse again.
Still weak.
Still present.
He refused to remove his hand.
Every second mattered now.
The ambulance sirens became louder.
Closer.
Almost at the entrance.
The funeral home, once filled only with mourning, had transformed into a place balanced between despair and impossible hope.
No one spoke.
May you like
No one cried.
Everyone simply waited for the next heartbeat.
