Chapter 9 - BACK TO THE BASEMENTFire investigators allowed us to enter the damaged house shortly before midnight.

The upper floors were unstable, but the basement structure remained intact.
Marcus, federal agents, and I entered through the garage tunnel.
Noah and Lily stayed at the hotel with police protection.
Lena requested permission to help.
She knew the basement better than anyone and had seen Miriam use controls hidden behind the south wall.
Prosecutors agreed on the condition that she remain restrained and guarded.
Returning to the basement affected her immediately.
The folding table was burned.
The scripted statements were blackened but still readable.
Lena stared at them.
“I kept telling myself I was preparing the children for court.”
“You were teaching them to fear their own memories.”
“I know.”
There was nothing else to say.
She led us to a section of concrete behind the camera mount. A biometric panel appeared when she pressed two hidden switches.
It required Evelyn’s fingerprint.
Evelyn had been released under federal supervision after evidence confirmed her credentials were compromised.
She placed her hand against the scanner.
The wall opened.
A steel staircase descended into a server chamber four times larger than the basement above.
Miriam stood on a central platform.
She was alone.
Or appeared to be.
Screens surrounding her displayed Victor, Claire, Julian, Evelyn, Lena, and me.
Each face repeated a different confession.
“I stole the patents.”
“I harmed the children.”
“I ordered the fire.”
“I created Harbor.”
Some statements were real.
Most were not.
Miriam welcomed us calmly.
“Adrian finally came home.”
“Stop the release.”
“You still think this is about files?”
“What do you want?”
“The truth.”
“You manufactured lies.”
“I revealed how easily truth can be manufactured.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You destroyed families to punish Victor.”
“Victor was only the first proof.”
“You used me.”
“You used yourself.”
Miriam exposed Evelyn’s years of work for Harbor. Even if she had not designed the family operations, she had protected the organization that funded them.
Then Miriam turned to Lena.
“You wanted Adrian’s devotion but married him under another man’s instruction. When you felt him pulling away, I only gave your fear a voice.”
Lena lowered her eyes.
Finally, Miriam faced me.
“And you built technology capable of impersonating anyone while ignoring the people living inside your own home.”
That accusation contained truth.
It did not justify what she had done.
But I could not deny my part in creating the conditions she exploited.
“The children are not evidence in your experiment,” I said.
“No. They are the only honest witnesses.”
The countdown showed nineteen minutes.
Federal technicians attempted to disconnect the servers, but every cable triggered backup systems in other locations.
Evelyn examined the architecture.
Samuel Shaw had designed it.
The system required three founding encryption keys to stop the release.
Victor possessed one.
Evelyn possessed the second through her father’s estate.
The third belonged to the original Helix founder.
Me.
We entered the keys.
ACCESS DENIED.
Miriam smiled.
“You forgot the fourth founder.”
Helix had only three acknowledged founders.
Then a hidden camera activated.
Samuel Shaw appeared on screen.
He was alive.
Older, thinner, but unmistakable.
He had helped Miriam build Project Harbor from the beginning.
Evelyn stared at her father.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I needed you inside Victor’s company.”
“Was any part of my life real?”
Samuel did not answer.
Miriam announced that Samuel held the fourth key.
He would release it only if Helix publicly transferred all disputed patents to the Shaw family and admitted that its fortune had been built on theft.
I agreed immediately.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Helix could collapse.”
“It should collapse before millions of people are endangered.”
We broadcast the confession and patent transfer live.
Samuel entered his key remotely.
The countdown stopped at forty-two seconds.
Federal agents arrested Miriam.
Samuel’s location was traced to Switzerland.
For a moment, every server went dark.
Then one screen returned.
A prerecorded video of Miriam appeared.
“I knew Adrian would surrender the company,” she said. “That was never the final test.”
A new countdown began.
Five minutes.
This one was connected to the hotel where Noah and Lily were staying.
Their security cameras appeared on screen.
The children’s room was empty.
A message flashed beneath the image.
SUBJECTS RELOCATED.
Lena screamed.
Marcus checked his phone.
The police officers guarding the children had received a synthetic evacuation order in my voice.
Noah and Lily had been placed inside a black vehicle.
May you like
The vehicle belonged to Samuel Shaw.
And it was heading toward the Manhattan waterfront.
