Chapter 2 - THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERAThe police arrived at 1:39 a.m.

By two, our house was crowded with officers, investigators, medical personnel, and child-protection workers.

Noah and Lily were examined upstairs. Neither had serious physical injuries, but both showed signs of prolonged fear, sleep deprivation, and emotional coercion.

Lena was placed in a separate room.

She denied abusing the children.

According to her, the basement sessions were part of a therapeutic program designed to help Noah and Lily communicate their anxiety about my work schedule.

No licensed therapist had approved that program.

The camera in the basement had recorded more than eighty hours of footage.

Most files were encrypted.

Evelyn arranged for Helix technicians to copy the drives before police took them as evidence. Victor Sloane’s signature on the removal plan made the investigation more complicated. He was not simply my board chairman.

He had personally financed Helix when the company was close to bankruptcy.

Without Victor, I would not have had a corporation, the Manhattan contract, or the house in which my children had been terrorized.

Noah sat on the edge of his bed with a blanket around his shoulders.

“Who came downstairs with Mom?” I asked.

He looked toward the door to make certain Lena was not nearby.

“A man.”

“Did you know him?”

“He wore a mask at first.”

“At first?”

“One night it slipped.”

Noah reached for my phone and searched through photographs from company events.

After several minutes, he pointed to a man standing beside Victor at a charity gala.

Dr. Julian Holt.

Holt was a behavioral psychologist hired by Helix to evaluate employees working in high-pressure security positions. He had conducted my executive fitness assessment six months earlier.

“He told Mom what questions to ask,” Noah said.

“What questions?”

“Questions about you.”

Lily climbed into my lap.

“He wanted us to say you shouted.”

“Did I?”

“Sometimes,” she whispered.

The answer hurt, but I did not deny it.

I had raised my voice when stressed. I had missed school events and broken promises. I had come home carrying the frustration of meetings and deadlines.

But the children explained that Holt demanded something more specific.

He wanted examples of violence.

When they could not provide any, Lena ordered them to repeat invented stories until they stopped making mistakes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

Noah stared down at his hands.

“Mom said you would lose your company if we talked.”

The truth was worse.

Lena had taught them that protecting me required remaining silent.

At dawn, Evelyn entered with news from Manhattan.

The investment meeting had continued without me.

Victor had invoked an emergency clause claiming that my unexplained departure demonstrated instability. The board voted to suspend my authority until an internal investigation could determine whether I remained capable of leading Helix.

“They cannot remove me because I went home to my children.”

“They can if they claim your absence endangered the deal.”

“I own thirty-eight percent of the company.”

“The family trust owns another twenty percent,” Evelyn said. “But if you are declared incapacitated, control of those shares transfers to the children’s legal guardian.”

Lena.

The documents in the basement were not merely preparation for divorce.

They were part of a corporate takeover.

My phone rang.

Victor Sloane’s name appeared on the screen.

I answered on speaker.

“Adrian,” he said warmly, “I heard there was an incident.”

“You heard quickly.”

“Marcus alerted corporate security.”

“Your signature is on a plan to remove me from my children.”

Silence followed.

Then Victor sighed.

“You are frightened and misinterpreting preliminary legal documents.”

“They were hidden in my basement.”

“Lena approached the board because she was concerned about your behavior.”

“My behavior?”

“You have become increasingly erratic. Canceling tonight’s meeting only confirms that concern.”

I glanced at Evelyn.

She was recording the call.

“You hired Dr. Holt.”

“To help your family.”

“He coached my children to accuse me.”

“That is a serious allegation.”

“It is also recorded.”

Another pause.

When Victor spoke again, the warmth had vanished.

“Return to Manhattan. We will discuss this privately.”

“I’m staying with my children.”

“Then the board will proceed without you.”

The call ended.

Marcus entered carrying a small black device.

He had found it wired behind the basement camera.

“It transmitted the footage somewhere outside the house,” he explained.

“To whom?”

“We’re tracing the signal.”

A forensic technician interrupted him.

Someone had remotely accessed the basement system moments after police arrived. The encrypted drives had not been erased, but a hidden program was attempting to corrupt them.

Helix technicians isolated the network before the destruction was complete.

Only one file opened successfully.

It showed Lena standing in the basement three weeks earlier.

Dr. Holt was beside her.

Victor Sloane stood behind the camera.

Noah and Lily were not present.

Victor handed Lena a folder and said, “Once the children repeat the statements naturally, Adrian will be finished.”

Lena looked frightened.

“What happens after I receive the shares?”

“You receive nothing until the contract is signed.”

“You promised me control.”

Victor stepped close enough that she moved backward.

“I promised you freedom from your husband. Do not confuse that with power.”

The video ended.

Lena had participated willingly, but she was not controlling the operation.

Victor was.

Evelyn immediately contacted federal investigators.

Before she could send the footage, every screen inside the house flashed white.

The security system shut down.

The doors locked automatically.

Then a prerecorded message played through the speakers.

My own voice filled the house.

“I swear I’ll destroy all of you.”

The recording sounded real.

But I had never said those words.

Outside, police officers raised their weapons toward the windows.

Someone had hijacked my home and broadcast a manufactured threat.

Marcus tried to override the locks.

“They’re framing you in real time.”

A red warning appeared on the main screen.

FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEM DISABLED.

GAS DETECTED IN BASEMENT.

I smelled something sharp rising through the vents.

May you like

The house had become a sealed chamber.

And my children were still inside.
