Chapter 7 - SIXTY-TWO FLOORS ABOVE MANHATTANI arrived at the Helix tower twenty-eight minutes later.

Police surrounded the building, but Claire had positioned Noah near the unfinished edge of the sixty-second floor. Any forced entry could put him in greater danger.
Marcus had been shot in the shoulder. He was conscious but trapped behind a concrete barrier.
Victor continued the board meeting ten floors below.
Miriam remained missing.
The entire conspiracy was unfolding inside one building.
I entered alone.
Claire had left the stairwell door unlocked.
Noah stood near a support column with his hands bound. Wind tore through the open floor and carried rain across the concrete.
Claire held a handgun.
“You should have stayed in Manhattan that night,” she said.
“You nearly killed my family.”
“I believed they had left the house.”
“You locked the doors.”
“Miriam controlled the system.”
“You connected the laptop.”
“Because she promised to destroy the evidence against me.”
“What evidence?”
Claire’s hand shook.
Years earlier, she worked as a financial assistant for Victor. She discovered his relationship with Lena and began stealing small amounts from his private accounts.
Victor caught her.
Instead of reporting the theft, he forced her to work for Harbor.
Miriam later took control of the blackmail.
Claire had committed crimes, but she had never possessed the power she pretended to have.
“Let Noah go.”
“I need the files Evelyn collected.”
“They’re with federal agents.”
“Then I’m dead.”
“No. You testify.”
“You think Victor lets witnesses live?”
“Victor no longer controls anything.”
Claire looked toward the city.
“Miriam does.”
Noah shifted his feet.
Claire ordered him to stop.
He looked at me.
“The meeting,” he said. “You have to stop the vote.”
“My son matters more than the vote.”
“That’s what Mom said you’d never understand.”
“What?”
“She said losing Helix would destroy you.”
“Helix is a company. You are my child.”
His face crumpled.
For months, Lena and Miriam had convinced him that my love depended on success. Every canceled dinner and missed school event had made their lie easier to believe.
I slowly removed my phone and placed it on the floor.
“I am not choosing the company.”
Claire moved closer to retrieve it.
Noah dropped suddenly.
Marcus emerged from behind the barrier and struck Claire’s wrist with a metal pipe. The gun slid across the floor.
I reached Noah while Marcus restrained her.
Police entered seconds later.
Claire did not resist.
As officers led her away, she gave me one warning.
“Miriam has someone inside the board.”
I took Noah downstairs.
The emergency board meeting was being broadcast to shareholders. Victor had begun presenting the family trust as evidence that Adrian Cole no longer controlled Helix.
Then Noah entered the room.
Every director turned.
Victor’s confidence vanished.
Noah walked to the head of the table and placed the hidden basement key in front of him.
“You made my mother hurt us.”
Victor looked at the cameras.
“This child has endured a traumatic event.”
“You watched through the camera.”
“That is not true.”
Evelyn entered with federal investigators and played the recovered footage.
Victor’s voice filled the boardroom.
“Once the children repeat the statements naturally, Adrian will be finished.”
The directors erupted.
Victor claimed the recording was fabricated.
Then Lena entered wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet.
Prosecutors had temporarily released her to testify under supervision.
She looked at Noah but did not approach.
“I helped him,” she said.
Reporters crowded the glass wall outside.
Lena described Victor arranging our marriage, controlling her finances, and threatening to expose her. She also admitted that she had chosen to obey him.
“No one forced me to lock my children in that basement,” she said. “Fear explains my actions. It does not excuse them.”
Victor stood.
“You are emotionally unstable.”
“I learned instability from you.”
Federal agents arrested him.
The board suspended the merger vote and restored my authority temporarily.
For one brief moment, I believed the nightmare was ending.
Then Evelyn received an email.
The merger had already been completed.
An electronic vote was submitted during the chaos using authorization from a majority of directors.
Harbor Strategic Group now controlled Helix.
The new chief executive had been appointed.
Not Victor.
Not Miriam.
Evelyn opened the corporate notice.
Her own name appeared at the top.
Someone had used her credentials to seize the company.
The boardroom screens suddenly switched on.
Miriam Holt appeared from an unknown location.
“Congratulations, Evelyn,” she said. “You finally inherited the empire you pretended not to want.”
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Miriam smiled.
“And now everyone will believe you planned the entire operation.”
Police officers turned toward Evelyn.
Her access badge had authorized the merger.
Her digital signature appeared on every document.

A second group of agents entered the room.
They were there to arrest her.
