PART 4: Seeking Out the Billionaire

PART 4: Seeking Out the Billionaire

Midnight meetings reveal hidden wedding clauses.

By 1:00 a.m., I was standing outside the heavy mahogany double doors of Nathan Cole’s private study on the second floor, a sliver of warm light shining out from beneath the threshold.

I raised my knuckles and knocked twice.

"Enter," Nathan’s voice called out from within, sounding tired and rough.

I pushed the door open.

Nathan was sitting at his massive walnut desk, surrounded by open architectural blueprints, financial ledgers, and a half-empty glass of plain bottled water.

He looked up, blinking heavily against the desk lamp, his face pale, with dark circles etched deep beneath his eyes.

"Elena?" Nathan asked, rubbing his temples with trembling fingers. "Is everything alright with Sophia? Did she have another nightmare?"

"No, Mr. Cole. Sophia is sleeping," I said, closing the study door quietly behind me and clicking the privacy lock. "I need to show you something. And you need to listen to every word I say without interrupting."

Nathan frowned, leaning back in his leather chair, sensing the absolute gravity in my tone.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the unmarked brown glass vial, and placed it squarely on top of his financial spreadsheets.

"What is this?" he asked, picking it up and examining the dropper cap.

"I found it in the locked pantry ten minutes ago," I said quietly. "Sophia tried to warn you at dinner, Mr. Cole. And she tried to warn me three weeks ago. Someone has been adding this substance to your wine and your evening tea for months."

Nathan stared at the vial, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping his lips.

"Elena, you think someone is trying to poison me? That’s absurd. My doctor said my neurological fatigue is burnout—"

"Your doctor was chosen and paid for by Vanessa’s family estate," I interrupted sharply. "Have you ever asked yourself why your memory lapses only happen after you spend an evening alone with her? Why you shake during board meetings, but recover miraculously when you take business trips out of state?"

Nathan went completely still.

The blood drained from his face as he recalled his last trip to Zurich—three days away from the estate where his morning headaches had completely vanished, only to return with a vengeance the very night he came home to Vanessa’s welcome-back dinner.

Slowly, his hand reached down to open his desk drawer.

He pulled out a heavy black leather folder stamped with gold foil lettering—the official prenuptial and estate merger agreement drafted by the Hale family legal team.

"When we signed the engagement papers six months ago," Nathan whispered, his voice shaking as he flipped open the pages, "there was a specific clause regarding medical incapacity."

He pointed a trembling finger down at a highlighted paragraph near the back.

"If I am diagnosed with severe cognitive decline, memory failure, or permanent neurological impairment prior to our wedding day... absolute voting control of Cole Technologies automatically transfers to my primary spouse and legal guardian."

I stared at the paper, the chilling reality snapping violently into focus.
