Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY CHOSE

For half a second, the world stopped.

Liam hit the floor.

Blood spread across the white fabric of his shirt near his shoulder.

Not his heart.

Avery registered that instinctively.

Then training replaced fear.

She drove her heel down onto Conrad's foot and ripped her arm free.

Conrad raised the weapon again.

Before he could fire, the corridor lights died.

Julian.

Total darkness.

Then emergency strobes flashed red.

Federal agents breached from both sides.

"FBI! DROP THE WEAPON!"

Conrad fired wildly.

Glass shattered.

Avery threw herself toward the conference room.

Leo was crying behind the damaged glass.

"Mom!"

"I'm here!"

The guard who had been watching Leo ran.

He made it three steps before agents tackled him.

Conrad tried reaching a service elevator.

Liam, half-conscious on the floor, caught his ankle.

It was almost absurd.

The billionaire who had once humiliated Avery because he believed his mother's lies was bleeding on a dirty laboratory floor, using his remaining strength to stop the man who had kidnapped the son he had only learned existed hours earlier.

Conrad kicked him.

Liam didn't let go.

Agents reached them.

Conrad Vale was forced face-down.

Handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

For the first time in nearly forty years, the man behind the Sterling empire had no one left to order around.

Avery didn't watch.

She broke through the conference-room door.

Leo ran into her arms.

"Mom!"

She dropped to her knees.

"I've got you."

"They said you weren't coming."

"I will always come."

"Always?"

"Always."

Leo buried his face against her.

Over his shoulder, Avery saw paramedics surrounding Liam.

Their eyes met.

He didn't ask her to come closer.

Didn't reach for Leo.

Didn't say I saved him.

He simply closed his eyes as they lifted him onto the stretcher.

Conrad's arrest detonated through Wall Street before sunrise.

By noon, federal prosecutors had frozen dozens of accounts.

By evening, Sterling Global's board had collapsed.

Three directors resigned.

Two were arrested.

Internal records revealed nearly fourteen years of bribery, fraud, pension theft and illegal offshore transfers.

Then Liam Sterling did something no one expected.

From his hospital bed, with a bullet wound through his shoulder and his company's stock in free fall, he authorized the public release of every internal audit his attorneys had begged him to bury.

Including evidence that made him look negligent.

Including emails showing how often he had ignored Avery five years earlier.

Including messages from Victoria warning him not to investigate his wife's disappearance.

He didn't protect himself.

Avery watched the press conference from another room.

A reporter shouted:

"Mr. Sterling, are you stepping down because of criminal exposure?"

Liam answered without hesitation.

"I'm stepping down because a man who refuses to question convenient lies has no business controlling other people's lives."

Another reporter shouted:

"Do you expect Avery Sterling to forgive you?"

"No."

"Do you want her back?"

Liam's jaw tightened.

"What I want stopped mattering the day I made her suffering about my pride."

Avery turned off the television.

Not because she hated hearing him.

Because part of her didn't.

And that frightened her.

Two weeks later, Victoria accepted a federal cooperation agreement.

She implicated Conrad in Arthur's death.

She admitted ordering Avery's disappearance to be staged.

She admitted bribing hospital officials.

She admitted knowing Leo had survived.

The final charge sheet ran more than sixty pages.

Then came Arthur's last secret.

Julian delivered it personally.

They were sitting in Avery's temporary apartment when he placed a sealed envelope on the table.

"Federal investigators found this inside Arthur's private legal archive."

Avery recognized the handwriting.

FOR AVERY — ONLY AFTER THE TRUTH IS PUBLIC.

Inside was a codicil.

Arthur had amended his estate six months before his death.

Avery read the first page.

Then the second.

Her hands began shaking.

"This can't be right."

"It is."

Arthur had never intended Leo to be the only beneficiary.

If Avery were proven alive and Victoria were implicated in fraudulent interference with the Sterling marriage, Arthur's personal controlling block—another eighteen percent—would transfer directly to Avery.

Not Liam.

Not Leo.

Avery.

Combined with Leo's trust, she now controlled forty-nine percent of Sterling Global.

Enough, with several independent shareholders, to decide the company's future.

A handwritten note accompanied the documents.

Avery unfolded it.

They will tell you blood makes a Sterling.

It doesn't.

Character does.

If my family destroys itself, build something better from what remains.

Avery sat silently for a long time.

Julian finally asked:

"What are you going to do?"

She looked toward the Manhattan skyline.

For five years, Avery had dreamed of escaping the Sterling name.

Now she possessed the power to control it.

May you like

She smiled slowly.

"I'm going to end the dynasty."
