Chapter 6 - THE KING BEHIND THE QUEEN

"Driver!"
Julian slammed his fist against the partition.
No response.
The SUV shot through a red light.
Avery tightened her arms around Leo.
"Mom, what's happening?"
"Nothing you need to worry about."
Even Leo knew that was a lie.
Julian pulled out his phone.
"No signal."
"Jammer?"
"Most likely."
The two vehicles behind them drew closer.
Avery looked through the windshield.
They were heading downtown.
Not toward her penthouse.
Not toward any FBI safe location.
Toward the river.
Julian reached beneath the rear seat and pulled a small emergency release.
Nothing happened.
"Sterling armored vehicles," he muttered. "Designed specifically so nobody can open them from the inside during an attack."
"That's comforting."
"Usually."
The SUV suddenly swerved.
A horn screamed.
Leo buried his face against Avery.
Then another vehicle appeared from a side street.
A silver sedan.
It rammed directly into the rear quarter panel of their SUV.
Metal shrieked.
The driver lost control.
The armored vehicle jumped the curb and smashed into a row of concrete barriers.
Airbags exploded in the front compartment.
Julian kicked the damaged rear door.
Once.
Twice.
The lock broke.
"Out!"
Avery grabbed Leo.
They stumbled into the rain.
The silver sedan stopped twenty feet away.
Avery expected gunmen.
Instead, Liam Sterling stepped out.
No jacket.
No bodyguards.
Blood running from a cut above his eyebrow.
"You followed us?" Avery shouted.
"I saw Conrad's security team leave the estate three minutes after you did."
"Stay away from my son."
"I know."
There was something different in Liam's voice.
He didn't move toward Leo.
Didn't say my son.
Didn't ask for forgiveness.
He simply pointed toward a waiting taxi.
"Go."
Julian studied him.
"You caused that crash."
"You're welcome."
Avery wanted to hate him.
Part of her always would.
But another pair of black SUVs turned onto the street.
Julian grabbed Avery's arm.
"We move now."
They disappeared into the taxi.
Liam remained standing in the rain.
For the first time since discovering Leo existed, he did not follow.
Three hours later, Avery sat inside a federal safe apartment overlooking Queens.
Leo slept in the next room.
Two agents stood outside.
Julian was examining Arthur's files when Avery's secure phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"Avery Vance."
A familiar voice responded.
"I suppose you're proud of yourself."
Victoria.
Avery went still.
"Federal detention has terrible room service, I hear."
Victoria laughed bitterly.
"You still think this is revenge."
"What would you call it?"
"Survival."
Avery almost disconnected.
Then Victoria said two words.
"Conrad Vale."
Avery looked toward Julian.
"I'm listening."
"Conrad knows about Arthur's trust."
"You knew too."
"Of course I knew."
"That's why you tried to erase Leo."
Silence.
For once, Victoria didn't deny it.
"I wanted the child removed from the Sterling family."
"Removed?"
"I ordered the hospital administrator to tell Liam the baby died."
Avery's nails dug into her palm.
"And the forged death certificate?"
"Conrad."
"The men who came after us?"
Victoria hesitated.
"Conrad."
Avery closed her eyes.
"You expect me to believe you suddenly developed a conscience?"
"No."
Victoria's voice became softer.
"I expect you to understand greed."
She explained.
Arthur had grown suspicious of Conrad years before his death.
Money had vanished through Sterling subsidiaries.
Pension funds had been quietly raided.
International accounts had been manipulated.
Arthur planned to remove Conrad from the board.
Then Avery became pregnant.
Arthur secretly rewrote his trust.
If Liam had a legitimate biological heir, a massive block of voting shares would eventually pass outside Conrad's control.
Conrad discovered it.
Victoria had wanted Avery gone because of class, bloodline and control.
Conrad had wanted Leo gone because Leo represented thirty-one percent of Sterling Global.
"And Arthur?" Avery asked.
Victoria said nothing.
Avery's heartbeat changed.
"Victoria."
"He didn't die from a stroke."
The room seemed to tilt.
Julian looked up sharply.
"What happened?"
"I never touched Arthur," Victoria said quickly. "I swear to you."
"Then who did?"
"Conrad's private physician adjusted his medication."
Avery couldn't speak.
Arthur hadn't died naturally.
He had been eliminated.
"And you covered it up."
"Yes."
There it was.
No apology.
No defense.
Just a monstrous truth.
Victoria continued.
"Conrad promised Liam would inherit everything. He promised the family would survive."
"You protected the Sterling name."
"I protected my son."
"No. You destroyed him."
For the first time, Victoria's voice cracked.
"Perhaps."
Avery heard movement on the other end.
An agent telling Victoria her time was almost finished.
Then Victoria whispered:
"Conrad will not kill Leo immediately."
Avery froze.
"Why?"
"He needs your signature."
"For the trust."
"Yes."
"And if I refuse?"
Victoria inhaled.
"He'll make you watch what happens next."
The call ended.
Avery stood abruptly.
She went toward Leo's bedroom.
The bed was empty.
For one horrifying second she couldn't comprehend what she was seeing.
Then she noticed the open bathroom window.
The curtain moved in the night air.
On the pillow lay Leo's stuffed dinosaur.
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
chapter 7 THE PRICE OF A SON
Avery didn't scream.
She became still.
Terrifyingly still.
Julian had known her long enough to understand that Avery's silence was more dangerous than panic.
"How?" she asked.
The federal agent guarding the hallway looked sick.
"We're checking cameras."
"How did someone enter a federal safe apartment?"
"No one entered."
Julian was already examining the window.
"This wasn't the extraction point."
Avery looked at him.
"What?"
"He was moved through the service corridor."
The agent's face went pale.
"That's impossible."
Julian turned.
"Then somebody inside your protection detail is compromised."
Twenty minutes later they found the footage.
A man wearing an FBI windbreaker had walked through the rear corridor holding Leo's hand.
Leo looked calm.
Because the man had shown him something.
A phone.
On the screen was Liam.
Except Liam hadn't called.
The video was artificial.
Perfect voice.
Perfect face.
"Dad said Mom sent me."
Four seconds of manufactured trust.
That was all it had taken.
Avery watched the footage once.
Then again.
Then she turned it off.
"Where is Liam?"
He arrived fourteen minutes later.
When Avery showed him the video, something broke behind his eyes.
"He went with them because he thought I told him to."
Avery's voice was ice.
"He doesn't even know you."
"I know."
"And they used your face because you're his father."
"I know."
"I told you never to look for us again."
Liam nodded.
He didn't defend himself.
"Tell me what you need."
Avery pushed the ransom note across the table.
His face drained of color.
"Conrad."
"Your godfather."
Liam stared at the note.
"I called him Uncle Conrad until I was twenty-six."
"Then you should know how he thinks."
Liam slowly sat down.
"He won't meet you personally."
"Obviously."
"He'll use one of Sterling's abandoned properties."
"Which one?"
"There are twenty-seven."
Julian placed Arthur's files across the table.
"Only four have underground access, private power and no active security contracts."
Liam looked at him.
"Three."
Julian frowned.
"The Hudson Biotech campus lost underground power in 2022."
"Publicly."
Liam pointed at the map.
"My father kept a private generator there."
Avery stared.
"Why?"
"Because Arthur built a panic room under the research wing after 9/11."
Silence.
Julian began typing.
Then Liam said something unexpected.
"Conrad doesn't need Avery's signature."
Both of them looked at him.
"What?"
"He needs mine too."
Liam explained.
Arthur's trust had been designed with two layers.
Leo owned the beneficial interest.
But until Leo turned twenty-five, the controlling voting block could only be permanently transferred with authorization from his legal guardian and the current Sterling family trustee.
Liam.
Avery felt the trap become visible.
"So that's why they haven't killed you."
"Yes."
Julian looked between them.
"Conrad needs both parents."
Liam gave a humorless laugh.
"First useful thing I've done for my son."
Avery's eyes hardened.
"Don't."
He stopped.
"Don't turn this into redemption."
"I'm not."
"You don't get redemption because you're useful once."
"I know."
For the first time, Avery believed he meant it.
At 11:42 p.m., Avery entered the abandoned Hudson Biotech campus carrying the transfer documents.
Alone.
At least, that was what Conrad believed.
A microphone smaller than a grain of rice was embedded in her earring.
Julian tracked her from an unmarked vehicle two blocks away.
Federal tactical teams waited outside the perimeter.
Liam had been ordered to remain away.
He didn't.
Avery descended into the underground research wing.
Emergency lights flickered.
At the end of a corridor stood Conrad Vale.
Elegant.
Calm.
Silver hair perfectly combed.
Leo sat behind him in a glass conference room with a security guard.
He was frightened.
But alive.
"Avery."
Conrad smiled.
"I always wondered whether you'd inherit Arthur's stubbornness."
"Let him go."
"Sign."
"You killed Arthur."
Conrad's smile faded slightly.
"You've been speaking with Victoria."
"She's more talkative without her lawyers."
"Victoria is a frightened old woman."
"Who helped you."
"Victoria helped herself."
Conrad stepped closer.
"Do you know what Sterling Global was before men like me built it?"
"My son's inheritance apparently."
His jaw tightened.
Avery saw it.
The first crack.
She opened the folder.
"I sign. Leo walks out."
"And Liam signs."
"He won't."
"He will."
"Why?"
Conrad smiled again.
"Because unlike you, Avery, Liam has finally understood what it feels like to love something more than himself."
A sound came from behind her.
Footsteps.
Avery turned.
Liam stepped into the corridor.
Conrad looked delighted.
"I knew you'd come."
Avery stared at Liam.
"I told you—"
"I know."
Liam walked past her.
He placed his own signed authorization on the table.
Conrad looked down.
Then frowned.
The signature was real.
But the document wasn't a transfer.
It was a complete and irrevocable surrender of Liam Sterling's personal voting shares to an independent fiduciary trust.
Conrad's face changed.
"What did you do?"
Liam met his eyes.
"I made sure that even if Avery signs, you still can't control Sterling."
Conrad's composure vanished.
"You idiot."
"Probably."
"You just gave away your empire."
Liam looked through the glass at Leo.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"I finally figured out what the empire cost."
Conrad reached beneath his jacket.
Avery saw the movement.
"Liam!"
A gunshot cracked through the corridor.
Leo screamed.
May you like
Liam collapsed.
And Conrad grabbed Avery by the arm
