Chapter 13 - THE APOLOGY THAT CAME TOO LATE
Grace refused to open the letter.
Nathan placed it on the table.
“You don’t have to.”
Grace stared at Charles’s handwriting.
“I hate him.”
“You’re allowed.”
“I also think part of him tried to fix it.”
“You’re allowed that too.”
Grace looked at Nathan.
“How are you not angry?”
“I am.”
Nathan smiled sadly.
“I’m just tired of letting dead people decide what my life feels like.”
Grace finally opened the envelope.
Charles had written only one page.
Grace,
I told myself I was saving Nathan from a difficult life.
The truth is I was saving myself from embarrassment.
You loved my son when I barely knew how.
Lily deserves better than what I did to both of you.
If I cannot find the courage to tell Nathan the truth, I hope someday you will.
I am sorry.
Grace folded the letter.
Then she cried.
Not because the apology fixed anything.
It didn’t.
She cried because for five years she had carried fear that never belonged to her.
Nathan sat beside her.
She leaned against him.
Neither spoke.
Lily appeared in the doorway holding a stuffed rabbit.
“Why is Mommy crying?”
Grace wiped her face.
“Happy-sad tears.”
Lily frowned.
“That’s weird.”
Nathan laughed.
“It is.”
Lily climbed between them.
“Then hug.”
So they did.
Three months passed.
Marcus Vale was indicted.
Helena Ashford accepted a plea deal in exchange for testimony.
Victoria received probation, mandatory treatment, restitution, and a long-term protective order preventing contact with Grace or Lily.
She lost her inheritance.
For once, money couldn’t buy her way out of consequences.
Nathan also lost control of Cole Industries.
The company was broken apart during restructuring.
Reporters called Nathan foolish.
Former board members called him disloyal.
One television host asked if a child he had known only a few months was worth destroying a hundred-year-old corporation.
Nathan answered live.
“She didn’t destroy it.”
“The people who lied, stole, threatened women, and manipulated children destroyed it.”
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“My daughter just made me stop protecting them.”
The clip went viral.
Grace watched from home.
When Nathan returned that night, Lily ran to the door.
“Daddy!”
He picked her up.
Grace stood behind her.
Nathan smiled.
“What?”
Grace shook her head.
“Nothing.”
“That is definitely something.”
She stepped closer.
“For five years, I wondered what would happen if you ever found out.”
Nathan’s smile disappeared.
Grace looked at him.
“I imagined every possibility.”
“You hating me.”
“You taking Lily.”
“You choosing your family.”
Nathan swallowed.
“And?”
Grace reached for his hand.
“I never imagined you’d choose us.”
Nathan whispered, “I didn’t choose you because I lost everything else.”
Grace’s eyes searched his.
“I chose everything else to lose because I found you.”
They leaned closer.
Then Lily screamed.
“Eww!”
They jumped apart.
Lily covered her eyes.
“No kissing!”
Nathan laughed.
Grace laughed harder.
For the first time, their future felt possible.
Then Nathan’s phone rang.
Richard’s voice came through.
“Nathan, the audit found one last account.”
Nathan sighed.
“What now?”
Richard hesitated.

And it contained more money than Nathan had inherited in his entire life.
