Chapter 11 - NATHAN BURNS HIS OWN NAME

The charges were devastating.

Wire fraud.

Tax fraud.

Misuse of charitable funds.

Every transaction carried Nathan’s digital authorization.

Richard examined the evidence.

“It looks real.”

Nathan stared at him.

“But it isn’t.”

“I know.”

The prosecutor didn’t.

Marcus had spent years preparing Nathan to take the fall.

Grace sat beside Nathan outside the courtroom.

“You can leave.”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

“Walk away from us.”

“No.”

“If you fight this, you could go to prison.”

Nathan smiled faintly.

“Five years ago, you were threatened with losing everything because of me.”

“That wasn’t your fault.”

“It was my family.”

“Nathan—”

He took her hand.

“I missed five years.”

“I’m not missing another day.”

Inside court, Marcus testified that Nathan had become unstable after discovering Grace.

He claimed Nathan fabricated the conspiracy to avoid prosecution.

Then Victoria entered.

Marcus’s face changed.

Helena stood abruptly.

“What are you doing?”

Victoria walked past her mother.

“I’m telling the truth.”

She testified for three hours.

She admitted signing the original agreement.

Admitted knowing about Lily.

Admitted attacking Grace.

Then she described Marcus’s threats.

The prosecutor leaned forward.

“Do you have evidence?”

Victoria looked at Nathan.

Nathan nodded.

She handed over her phone.

Messages.

Audio recordings.

Emails.

Marcus finally lost his calm.

“She’s lying.”

Victoria looked at him.

“You taught me something, Marcus.”

He stared.

“Always keep leverage.”

The courtroom fell silent.

Richard submitted Charles’s recordings.

The judge ordered the DNA test unsealed.

Nathan Cole was officially recognized as Lily Bennett’s biological father.

Grace covered her face.

Nathan closed his eyes.

Then the judge ordered an emergency audit of Cole Industries.

Marcus stood.

“This is absurd.”

The judge looked at him.

“No.”

“This is overdue.”

Federal agents approached Marcus.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

But before they could reach him, Helena stood.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at Marcus.

Then at Nathan.

“I know where the original financial ledgers are.”

Marcus’s face went white.

Helena continued.

“They’re not at Cole Industries.”

Nathan frowned.

“Where?”

Helena swallowed.

“At Charles’s lake house.”

Marcus suddenly lunged for the courtroom door.

Agents tackled him.

Helena stared at Nathan.

“There’s something else there.”

“What?”

“A recording Charles made the night before he died.”

Nathan froze.

“My father died from a heart attack.”

Helena’s face crumpled.

“No.”

Nathan stared at her.

May you like

Helena whispered the truth.

“Charles was murdered.”
