Chapter 3: The Intersection of Two Worlds

The silence of the house was broken by the sharp, rhythmic ticking of the security system. Down in the hall, the atmosphere had shifted. The vultures were restless. Marcus had begun pouring drinks for the family lawyers, ready to produce the "original" documents that would strip Julian of his birthright. They were so blinded by the prospect of the multi-million dollar liquidation that they hadn't noticed the subtle changes in the environment. The internet connection had been severed from the outside world. The landlines were dead.

Julian walked out of his study, his footsteps echoing like gunshots against the marble. He looked like a king walking into his own courtroom. As he reached the center of the hall, the conversations died instantly. Beatrice’s glass stopped halfway to her lips. She looked at her son, noting the terrifying lack of empathy in his eyes. "Julian? You’re supposed to be in New York."

"I am where I need to be, Mother," he said, his voice cold, lethal, and final. He didn't look at them; he looked toward the basement stairs, where his wife lay. The tension in the room was palpable, a physical weight that pressed against the walls. The family didn't understand why the heavy oak doors of the villa had been locked from the outside. They didn't understand the sudden, blinding flash of police lights cutting through the heavy curtains. Julian walked to the center of the floor, standing right over the space where the path to the basement began. He was the protector who had barred the exits, the judge who had gathered the evidence, and the executioner who had finally arrived to read the verdict.
