Chapter 11 - The Fall

Toby flipped the heavy mahogany desk, pulling me behind it as bullets shredded the study.
“The upload is complete!” David’s voice blasted through the earpiece. “The ledger is live! The feds are breaching the lobby right now!”
Sterling realized the timeline had shifted. His phone began buzzing frantically. His aides burst into the room, screaming that their offshore accounts were being frozen by international authorities.
“Fall back!” Sterling ordered his men, turning toward the private helipad access stairs.
“He’s getting away!” I yelled to Toby.
Toby reloaded his weapon. “Stay here.”
He vaulted over the desk, laying down covering fire. Eleanor was on the ground, bleeding from a stray bullet to the abdomen. She reached out to me as I crawled past her.
“Elena... please,” she whimpered, her perfect facade finally broken.
I looked at the woman who had stolen my childhood, who had tried to drug and sell my son. I felt nothing.
“You’re on your own,” I said, stepping over her.
I followed Toby up the stairs to the roof. The storm over Manhattan was fierce, the wind howling. Sterling was sprinting toward a waiting helicopter, his guards trying to hold Toby back.
David burst through the roof access door from the opposite side, taking down the last two guards with precision shots.
Toby cornered Sterling near the edge of the helipad.
“It’s over, Thomas,” Toby yelled over the sound of the rotors. “The world sees you now.”
Sterling looked at the flashing red and blue lights converging on the building below. He looked at Toby, a vicious snarl on his face.

“I’ll never spend a day in a cage,” Sterling spat.
He didn't wait for Toby to fire. Sterling stepped backward, off the edge of the eighty-story building, disappearing into the dark, rainy abyss of the city.
