Chapter 10 - Blood and Glass

The first guard lunged at me. I ducked, letting my training—and sheer panic—take over. I pulled the ceramic knife from my thigh and drove it into his shoulder. He howled, dropping his baton.

The second guard drew a silenced pistol.

Before he could pull the trigger, the thick glass window of the penthouse shattered inward. A grappling hook latched onto the heavy mahogany desk.

Toby swung through the broken glass, suspended from a high-tension wire attached to the roof. He hit the carpet rolling, bringing up his weapon. Two suppressed shots took the armed guard down instantly.

Eleanor screamed, backing away toward the heavy oak doors.

Toby stood up, pulling off his security mask. He looked at the woman who had ruined his life.

“Hello, mother,” Toby said, his voice cold as ice.

Eleanor’s face drained of color. “Toby... it can’t be.”

“You burned Silver Pines to the ground to hide your sins. But you forgot one thing. Fire tempers steel.”

Suddenly, the doors burst open. Senator Sterling walked in, flanked by a dozen heavily armed men.

“Well, well,” Sterling clapped his hands slowly. “The prodigal son returns. And he brought the defective daughter.”

Sterling looked at Eleanor. “You promised me the boy, Eleanor. You failed. And now, you’ve brought a mess to my doorstep.”

He raised a hand, signaling his men. “Execute them all. Including her.”

Eleanor’s eyes went wide. “Thomas, no! I’ve served you for thirty years!”

The gunfire erupted.
