Chapter 13 - The First Cry

The surgeon looked up into my eyes, and a slow, weary, beautiful smile broke across his tired face.

"She made it, Ethan," Dr. Aris announced softly.

A breathless gasp tore from my throat.

"And... and the baby?" I sobbed out, gripping the surgeon's arms.

Right on cue, the doors behind the surgeon opened again.

A nurse rolled out a clear glass infant warming bassinet.

Inside, wrapped tightly in a soft blue wool blanket, was a tiny, newborn baby boy.

He had a thick tuft of dark hair, his tiny fists balled tight against his chest, his face red as he let out a loud, healthy, indignant cry that echoed down the quiet hospital corridor.

WAAAAAH! WAAAAAH!

It was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard in my entire life.

I dropped to my knees beside the glass bassinet, tears streaming down my face without restraint, pressing my forehead against the plastic edge.

"He's strong, Ethan," the nurse smiled, gently placing a warm blanket over his tiny shoulders. "His oxygen levels stabilized the second we cleared his airway. He weighs six pounds, eight ounces."

"And Claire?" I wept, looking up at Dr. Aris. "Can I see her?"

"She's out of surgery and waking up in the recovery bay," Dr. Aris confirmed, touching my shoulder. "The toxin is completely out of her system. She's asking for you."
