Chapter 12 - The Hospital Corridor

Ten minutes later, I burst through the double automatic doors of St. Jude’s Hospital emergency wing.

The smell of antiseptic and rubbing alcohol filled the air.

I sprinted down the long, sterile corridor toward the surgical waiting bay, my boots squeaking against the linoleum floor.

Detective Vance—the lead investigator assigned to the case—was standing near the operating room doors along with two uniformed officers.

"Ethan!" Vance called out, stepping forward. "Forensic techs swept your mother's house. They found three more vials of the synthetic sedative hidden in Nathan's private vehicle."

"I have my father's letter, Detective," I said, setting my heavy briefcase on the waiting room chairs and popping the latches open. "And the original audit ledgers. They murdered my father two years ago, and they tried to do the exact same thing to Claire tonight."

Detective Vance looked down at the handwritten letter signed by my late father, his jaw clenching in disbelief.

"My God," Vance whispered. "This isn't just attempted murder. This is a multi-year homicidal conspiracy."

Before he could speak further, the heavy double doors of Operating Room 3 swung wide open.

A pediatric surgeon wearing blue scrubs, a surgical mask pulled down around his neck, stepped out into the hallway.

His green scrubs were stained with fresh blood.

His face looked pale and exhausted.

I took three fast steps toward him, my heart hammering in my ears so loudly I could barely hear the ambient noise of the hospital.

"Doctor..." I choked out, unable to form a complete sentence. "Please..."
