Chapter 2

Chapter 2

“MISS EMILY!”

The triplets crashed into her at full speed.

Emily dropped her suitcase and fell to her knees on the sidewalk.

"Ethan!"

"Noah!"

"Liam!"

The boys wrapped themselves around her, sobbing so hard they could barely speak.

Their small bodies trembled.

Blood streaked their arms.

Their pajamas were torn.

And all three looked absolutely terrified.

Emily's heart nearly stopped.

"What happened?" she gasped. "Are you hurt?"

Noah shook his head violently.

"It's Victoria!"

The words exploded from him.

Behind them, Richard finally caught up.

Breathing hard.

Face pale.

Suit jacket hanging open.

For the first time since Emily had met him three years earlier, the billionaire looked completely out of control.

"Move away from her," he ordered.

But the triplets clung tighter.

"No!"

Liam buried his face against Emily's shoulder.

"We don't want Victoria!"

Richard froze.

Emily felt it immediately.

The uncertainty.

The crack forming in his confidence.

"What happened?" he demanded.

Ethan looked up.

Tears streamed down his face.

"She locked us in the playroom."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

The boy pointed toward the mansion.

"After you made Miss Emily leave."

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Richard's expression darkened.

"Explain."

The triplets spoke over one another.

Words tumbling out between sobs.

"She said we ruined everything."

"She said Dad would finally be happy."

"She grabbed Noah."

"She pushed Liam."

"She threw the toy box."

Emily looked at the blood on their arms.

Small cuts.

Glass scratches.

Fresh.

Real.

Not accidents.

Richard's face lost color.

"No."

The denial came automatically.

Like a reflex.

The boys stared at him.

"Daddy?"

Noah's voice cracked.

"Why didn't you believe Miss Emily?"

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Because Richard had no answer.

None.

For three years, Emily had been there every day.

School lunches.

Bedtime stories.

Doctor appointments.

Nightmares.

Birthday parties.

First bike rides.

Lost teeth.

Fever-filled nights.

Every memory contained her.

And yet when Victoria made an accusation—

He hadn't hesitated.

Not even for thirty seconds.

Not even long enough to ask questions.

Not even long enough to hear Emily's side.

The realization landed like a punch to the chest.

Something was wrong.

Terribly wrong.

Emily slowly stood.

The triplets remained attached to her.

Like frightened baby animals.

Richard noticed.

And suddenly he saw something he had ignored for years.

The boys weren't running toward him.

They were running away from someone else.

Toward Emily.

Toward safety.

Toward trust.

The kind of trust children don't fake.

A black SUV screeched to a stop nearby.

The mansion's head of security jumped out.

"Mr. Hawthorne!"

Richard turned.

"What?"

The man looked shaken.

Genuinely shaken.

"We reviewed the hallway cameras."

Emily's stomach tightened.

Richard stared.

"What cameras?"

"The footage from this morning."

Silence.

The security chief swallowed.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"We found the watch."

Richard blinked.

"What?"

The man opened a tablet.

Pressed play.

Everyone gathered around.

Even the triplets stopped crying.

The footage showed Victoria entering Emily's staff room.

Looking around carefully.

Checking both directions.

Then opening Emily's bag.

A Rolex appeared in her hand.

Victoria slid it inside.

Zipped the bag.

And walked away.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

No mistake.

Deliberate.

Calculated.

Planned.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Emily felt strangely calm.

Not vindicated.

Just tired.

So very tired.

Richard stared at the screen.

His face drained completely.

"No."

The word emerged as a whisper.

The security chief nodded.

"We checked three different camera angles."

Another clip appeared.

Then another.

Each one worse.

Each one undeniable.

Victoria planting evidence.

Victoria staging discovery.

Victoria rehearsing her reaction.

Victoria lying.

Every second captured in perfect detail.

The billionaire's hands began shaking.

Because for the first time he understood exactly what he had done.

He had destroyed an innocent person.

And he had done it publicly.

Without evidence.

Without investigation.

Without mercy.

Emily expected relief.

Instead she felt sadness.

Because none of this surprised her.

Not really.

She had known Victoria hated her.

She had known something was coming.

The only thing she hadn't expected was how easily Richard had believed it.

That hurt more than losing the job.

More than the humiliation.

More than being thrown out.

The triplets sensed her sadness.

Liam tugged her sleeve.

"Don't leave."

Her heart broke.

"Sweetheart—"

"Please."

Noah started crying again.

"We thought we'd never see you."

Richard closed his eyes.

Every word was a knife.

Because his children were revealing something he had ignored.

Emily wasn't just an employee.

She was family.

The only stable family they had known.

A scream echoed from the mansion.

Everyone turned.

Victoria stood at the front entrance.

Furious.

Wild-eyed.

Desperate.

"RICHARD!"

She was holding her phone.

Storming toward them.

Still unaware that the security footage had been discovered.

"Those boys are lying!"

Nobody answered.

Victoria stopped.

Her smile faltered.

The silence felt wrong.

Dangerous.

Then she noticed the tablet.

And everything changed.

Color drained from her face.

"What is that?"

Richard looked at her.

Not as a fiancé.

Not as a partner.

Not even as someone he loved.

He looked at her like a stranger.

A dangerous stranger.

The kind people wish they had never invited into their lives.

"Why?" he asked quietly.

Victoria froze.

"What?"

"The watch."

No response.

"The cameras caught everything."

Her eyes widened.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Enough for everyone to know.

The triplets hid behind Emily.

Victoria noticed.

And for one brief moment—

Something ugly crossed her face.

Something cold.

Something cruel.

Something Emily had seen before.

But Richard had never witnessed.

Until now.

The billionaire stared.

Watching the mask finally slip.

Watching the woman he planned to marry become someone else entirely.

And what he saw terrified him.

Because suddenly Emily's warnings.

The children's fear.

The strange incidents.

The accidents.

The tears.

The unexplained bruises.

The requests to send the boys away.

All of it began fitting together.

Like pieces of a puzzle he should have solved long ago.

Victoria took one step backward.

Then another.

Realizing the game was over.

But Richard wasn't looking at her anymore.

His gaze had shifted to the triplets.

Then to Emily.

Then back to the blood on the boys' arms.

A father's worst nightmare was forming in his mind.

Because if Victoria was willing to frame Emily...

What else had she done when nobody was watching?

May you like

And judging by the terror in his sons' eyes—

The answer was going to be far worse than anyone imagined.
