Chapter 2 - THE FIRST LIEDaniel stood immediately.
“Emma, this is not what you think.”
Emma stared at him.
“Then tell me what it is.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Her mother stepped forward.
“Please listen to me.”
Emma laughed once.
A broken, disbelieving sound.
“Listen to what?”
Evelyn reached for her.
Emma stepped back.
“Don't touch me.”
The words hurt her mother.
Emma saw it.
But she no longer cared.
“Does Dad know?”
“No.”
“Does anyone know?”
Evelyn's silence answered.
Emma looked at Daniel.
“You work with my father.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“You sat at our dinner table.”
He said nothing.
“You shook his hand.”
Still nothing.
“You called him your brother.”
Daniel whispered:
“I never meant to hurt him.”
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
“But you did.”
She turned to leave.
Her mother grabbed her wrist.
“Emma, please. Your father and I have been unhappy for years.”
Emma stopped.
Then slowly turned around.
“Then you should have left.”
Evelyn began crying.
“You don't understand.”
“No,” Emma said quietly.
“I understand perfectly.”
She pulled her wrist free.
“An unhappy marriage is not an excuse to become a liar.”
Then she walked away.
But she did not tell her father.
Not yet.
Because there was something about the entire situation that did not make sense.
