Chapter 1 - THE GOLDEN VENEERThe Carter estate had always looked perfect.

Perfect from the outside.

Perfect in photographs.

Perfect to the neighbors who admired the manicured gardens, the black luxury cars, and the family that appeared to have everything.

But Emma Carter had begun to realize that perfection was often just another word for something carefully hidden.

She was twenty years old.

Quiet.

Observant.

And increasingly suspicious of her mother.

For months, Evelyn Carter had been changing.

She began coming home late.

She started guarding her phone.

She took long showers immediately after returning from unexplained trips.

And whenever Emma asked questions, her mother smiled.

Too quickly.

Too perfectly.

That afternoon, Maria, the head housekeeper, told Emma that her mother was upstairs with a migraine.

Emma had heard the same excuse three times that month.

She walked toward the master bedroom.

The door was slightly open.

Then she heard a voice.

A man's voice.

Not her father's.

Emma froze.

Her hand slowly reached for the door.

And then she heard her mother laugh.

It was not the laugh Emma knew.

It was softer.

More intimate.

A laugh that belonged to a woman who believed she was completely alone.

Emma pushed the door open.

Her mother stood beside the window.

And a man was sitting on the edge of the bed.

The man was Daniel Hayes.

Her father's closest business partner.

Emma's entire world stopped.

Her mother turned.

The color disappeared from her face.

“Emma.”

Emma looked from her mother to Daniel.

Then at the expensive silk robe lying on the bed.

She did not scream.

She did not cry.

She simply whispered:

“How long?”

No one answered.

And in that silence, Emma understood.

The affair had not begun yesterday.

It had been going on for months.

May you like

Maybe years.
And the golden family she had spent her entire life believing in…

had never truly existed.
