Chapter 5 - The Rescue

Without thinking of the consequences, Madison grabbed a heavy iron pipe resting against the wall and slammed it against the metal door frame, creating a deafening, echoing clang. "Let him go!" she screamed, stepping into the warehouse, her phone held high in her other hand. "I’m streaming this live to a secure cloud server! If either of you touches him again, the police and the press get everything—including the PROJECT AV-PARKER files I took from Father's safe last night!"
The two thugs froze. They looked at each other, then at Madison. They knew who she was, and more importantly, they knew her father would destroy them if they harmed his daughter. "Miss Vance," one of them said smoothly, lowering his hands. "You shouldn't be here. This is family business." "I am no longer a Vance," Madison hissed, her voice vibrating with pure rage. "Get out. Now. Before I press send."
Evaluating the risk, the thugs slowly backed away, giving David one last warning look before disappearing into the shadows of the alleyway.
As soon as they were gone, Madison dropped the pipe and rushed to David’s side. He collapsed into her arms, his body trembling from exhaustion and pain. "Madison... why did you come?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "You shouldn't have. They’ll hurt you. They’ll ruin you." "They can't hurt me anymore, David," she wept, pulling him close, ignoring the dirt and blood ruining her clothes. "I know everything. I saw the files. I know what you did for me. I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry for not looking for you sooner."

David looked at her, tears finally breaking through his weathered face. For five years, he had borne the weight of the world alone, hated by the woman he loved so she could remain free.
"I’d do it all over again," he breathed before losing consciousness.
