Madison’s heart beat so loudly she was afraid it would echo through the mansion. She pulled the PROJECT AV-PARKER file out of the safe, quickly snapped photos of every single page with her smartphone, and carefully placed the folder back exactly as she found it. She locked the safe, slipped out of the office, and drove home in a state of hyper-awareness, constantly checking her rearview mirror to see if she was being followed.
Safe in her own living room, she began to read the documents on her phone. What she discovered made her physically sick.
Six years ago, during the final year of her marriage, David had been doing historical research for a book he wanted to write about the expansion of Dallas in the late 20th century. During his research, he had accidentally uncovered a massive, illegal land-grab scheme orchestrated by The Vance Group. Her father and brother had bribed city officials, forged environmental reports, and forcefully evicted low-income families from a sector of land that was later developed into a multi-million-dollar commercial hub.
But it was worse than just corporate greed. The file contained private investigator reports on David, complete with photos of him leaving his school, buying groceries, and sleeping in their bed.
There was a copy of a signed, forced NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) and a contract. If David didn't confess to an affair he didn't commit, leave Madison immediately without taking a single penny, resign from his teaching position, and disappear into poverty, The Vance Group would use their political connections to frame Madison for a fatal hit-and-run accident that had occurred around that time—an accident that Julian had actually caused, but had successfully covered up using a car registered in Madison’s name.
David had been given a choice: protect his career and his marriage, and watch his innocent wife go to prison for a crime she didn't commit, or destroy his own life to keep her safe.
He had chosen her. Every single time, he had chosen her.
