Chapter 5 - The Crack in the Foundation

Chapter 5 - The Crack in the Foundation

Clara fell to her knees on the hardwood floor, her hands flying to her face as she broke into violent, terrified sobs. Toby, frightened by his mother’s sudden tears, buried his face in her apron, his small shoulders shaking.
"I’m sorry! I’m so sorry, Ma'am!" Clara wept, her forehead pressing against the polished wood. "Please don't fire me! Please don't throw us out onto the street! I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know you were connected to him until I saw that picture just now! I’ve never seen your face before! He always kept everything so secret!"
Sable slowly stood up from her chair. She didn't rage. She didn't scream. She walked around the mahogany desk, her leather shoes making no sound against the rug, and crouched down in front of the sobbing woman. She gently placed her hands on Clara’s shoulders, forcing the young woman to look up.
"Clara," Sable said softly, her green eyes piercing through the maid’s panic. "You are not in trouble. I am not going to fire you. But I need you to breathe, and I need you to tell me the absolute truth. Who is that man to your son?"
Clara swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she wiped her tears away with the sleeve of her gray uniform. "That’s... that’s Mr. Callaway. Weston Callaway. He... he isn't my husband, Ma'am. I used to work as a junior night cleaner at the Callaway Tower four years ago. Camille Russo hired me personally."
Sable’s eyes narrowed to tiny slits of green fire. "Camille hired you?"
"Yes," Clara whispered, her voice shaking violently. "Camille told me Mr. Callaway needed a private, discrete apartment maintained north of the city for 'executive clients.' She paid me triple my salary to live there and keep it clean. But... but it wasn't for clients. Weston started coming there after midnight. He told me his marriage was a corporate prison. He told me his wife was a cold, useless woman who couldn't give him what he needed."
Clara looked down at Toby, her fingers stroking his sandy-blonde hair. "I was young, Ma'am. I was stupid. I believed him. I got pregnant with Toby three months after I moved into that apartment. The moment I told Camille, she didn't get angry. She smiled. She told me she would take care of everything."
"What do you mean, she took care of everything?" Sable asked, her heart beginning to beat with a sudden, dark realization.
"Camille took my prenatal medical records," Clara sobbed. "She used her father’s connections in the private clinic network to alter the dates on the registry. She told me that if I ever let Weston know the baby was mine, she would have my family evicted and ruined. She took my son's birth certificates... and she used them to convince Weston that she was the one who had given birth to his male heir."
Sable stood up slowly, her mind spinning as the pieces of the puzzle slammed together with a terrifying, thunderous precision.
Liam Callaway—the boy Weston had used as a weapon to destroy his marriage, the boy Preston and Adele had crowned as the fourth-generation savior of their empire—wasn't Camille’s child at all. Camille had used the maid’s secret pregnancy, altered the medical records, and presented Clara’s son as her own to force Weston into a marriage and secure her place in the Callaway trust. But because Clara had refused to give Toby up permanently, Camille had been forced to pay her off, keeping her hidden until Clara had run away to find work elsewhere—completely unaware that she was walking directly into the estate of Weston’s first wife.
"Clara," Sable said, a cold, beautiful smile finally breaking across her face—a smile that held the complete, unadulterated destruction of the Callaway family inside it. "Where is the original medical file from that clinic?"

Clara reached into the collar of her uniform, pulling out a small, old silver key. "I kept the backup drive hidden in my mother's safety deposit box, Ma'am. I was too afraid to destroy it. I thought... I thought one day I might need it to prove my boy exists."
"You don't need to be afraid anymore, Clara," Sable whispered, looking out the library window at the distant skyline of Jiang City. "Because your boy is about to inherit the earth."
