Chapter 4 - The Maid's Hidden Child

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the library of the Reed Estate. Sable sat at her large mahogany desk, her fingers flying across her laptop keyboard as she performed a deep-tissue financial audit of Callaway Holdings' subsidiary supply lines. For four years, she had been quietly buying up their vendor contracts through various front companies. By her estimation, she currently controlled eighty percent of the food, linen, and logistics providers that kept Callaway’s luxury hotels operational.

A soft knock came at the heavy oak door.

"Come in," Sable said without looking up.

The door pushed open slowly, and Clara, the maid, stepped into the room holding a silver tray with a fresh pot of chamomile tea. Little Toby followed closely behind her, his tiny fingers clutching the hem of his mother’s simple gray uniform apron. Toby was a quiet child, with large, expressive brown eyes and a soft tuft of sandy-blonde hair that always seemed to fall over his forehead.

"I’m sorry to disturb you, Ma'am," Clara murmured, her head lowered with the deep, submissive humility of someone who had spent her life working in the houses of the wealthy. "Mrs. Gable said you might want some tea before your evening conference call."

"Thank you, Clara. Just set it on the side table," Sable said, her expression softening as she looked at the young woman. Sable was never cruel to the staff; she knew exactly what it felt like to be looked down upon by people who measured human value by a bank balance.

Clara moved carefully, setting the tray down without making a sound. As she adjusted the porcelain cups, Toby wandered a few steps away, his eyes catching a silver-framed photograph sitting on the corner of Sable’s desk.

The photograph was from five years ago—an old image Sable hadn't yet thrown away because it was the only picture she had of herself when she was pregnant, standing in the garden of her old house. Weston was standing beside her, his arm wrapped around her waist, his face turned toward the camera with that bright, handsome smile he used when he wanted to look like a devoted protector.

Toby stopped dead in his tracks, his small hand pointing directly at Weston’s face in the silver frame.

"Look, Mommy," the toddler said, his voice high and perfectly innocent, echoing clearly in the quiet library.

Clara glanced over, her face suddenly draining of all color the moment her eyes hit the photograph. She froze, her hands trembling against the silver tray.

"Toby, no," Clara whispered frantically, reaching out to grab her son’s hand. "Come away from the desk. Don't touch the mistress's things."

But Toby didn't move. He tilted his head, his large brown eyes looking from the photograph up to Sable, and then back down again.

"Mommy," the three-year-old repeated, his small finger tapping against the glass covering Weston’s face. "Why is the man from our old bed inside the lady’s picture? Is he coming back to give me the red truck today?"

The sentence dropped into the library like a nuclear warhead.

Sable’s fingers froze over her keyboard. The ambient sounds of the estate—the ticking of the grandfather clock, the rustle of the wind outside—seemed to instantly vanish, replaced by a cold, ringing silence. She slowly raised her head, her emerald eyes locking onto the trembling maid.

"Clara," Sable said, her voice dropping into a register so quiet, so perfectly lethal, that the air in the room seemed to lose its oxygen. "What did your son just say?"
