Chapter 4 - The Smear CampaignTwo days after the eviction, Eleanor and Natalie moved into a cramped, mid-tier airport motel funded by the last remaining credit card Eleanor possessed that hadn't been frozen by the court. But instead of slinking into the shadows, they went on the offensive.

By Tuesday afternoon, local news outlets and high-society social media pages were flooded with orchestrated posts.

“DECORATED VETERAN EVICATED ELDERLY MOTHER IN THE DEAD OF WINTER,” one headline read on a popular regional blog.

A video posted by Natalie showed Eleanor sitting in a cheap motel bed, wrapped in a blanket, weeping softly into a handkerchief.

"My son returned from overseas a changed man," Eleanor claimed in the video, her voice trembling with practiced heartbreak. "He fell under the influence of an unstable woman who turned him against his own blood. They kicked us out of our ancestral home without a penny, leaving me without my life-saving heart medication!"

The comment sections erupted with outrage. Local country club members, former family friends, and ignorant bystanders began leaving scathing reviews on Claire’s small online design business page, calling her a "family destroyer" and a "gold-digger."

I was sitting in Claire's hospital room, watching the local evening news broadcast feature the story, when David Sloan walked in, looking exasperated.

"It's a PR nightmare, Ethan," David said, rubbing his temples. "They’re trying to sway the potential jury pool. The District Attorney is getting calls from local politicians asking why a respected widow is being prosecuted based on 'family drama.'"

Claire looked at the TV screen, her cheeks flushing with shame. "Ethan... maybe we should just give them the house. I can't bear people talking about you like this. You served your country with honor... they're dragging your name through the mud."

I walked over to the TV and turned it off. Then I sat beside Claire and took her hand.

"They think they are playing a game of public perception," I said quietly. "They forgot one crucial detail."

"What detail?" David asked.

"My father was paranoid about security after the warehouse break-in four years ago," I said, pulling out my laptop from my tactical bag. "He installed six high-definition, commercial-grade security cameras disguised as exterior lighting fixtures around the entire perimeter of the estate."

David’s eyes widened. "Cameras? Eleanor told the police the security system was broken years ago."

"It was broken on the interior hub," I smiled darkly, typing in an IP address and entering a 16-character encryption key my father had given me before he passed away. "Because Dad bypassed the house router completely. The system uploads directly to a private, off-grid cloud server hosted in Switzerland."

I hit Enter.

On the screen, a high-definition video feed appeared, complete with crystal-clear audio, timestamped from three nights ago.

The footage showed everything.

It showed Eleanor throwing open the front door. It showed Natalie tying Claire's hands with a blue nylon rope while Claire wept and pleaded. It showed Eleanor slapping Claire across the face, screaming, "You are nothing in this house! Sign the paper or die outside!"

It showed them dragging Claire onto the icy driveway, locking the door, and going back inside to sit at the dining table, laughing and pouring wine while Claire lay motionless in the snow beneath the window.

David gasped, leaning closer to the screen. "My God... it’s absolute proof. It’s unedited, timestamped, high-definition evidence of premeditated torture."

I looked at David. "Upload this file directly to the District Attorney's secure portal. And then, David... release the raw, unedited footage to every news station that aired Eleanor’s interview."

"With pleasure," David whispered.

Within three hours, the narrative didn't just flip—it detonated.
