Chapter 3 - The LockoutBy 8:00 AM the following morning, the sun rose over a frozen, sparkling landscape. Eleanor and Natalie had managed to post bail through a high-priced criminal defense lawyer, who had assured them that the charges would be reduced to a simple domestic dispute.

When their taxi pulled up the long driveway of the Vance Estate, they expected to find the house as they had left it—a sanctuary of luxury where they could plan their defense.

Instead, they found a moving truck parked on the lawn, three locksmith vans in the driveway, and four armed county sheriff deputies standing by the entrance steps.

Eleanor stormed out of the taxi, her designer coat trailing behind her, her face red with indignity. "What is the meaning of this?!" she shrieked at the deputies. "This is my house! Who gave you permission to park those hideous trucks on my lawn?!"

I walked out through the heavy mahogany front doors, flanked by David Sloan and a team of private security guards dressed in black uniforms.

"Good morning, Eleanor," I said, leaning against the porch railing. "You're late. Your possessions are already packed."

Natalie scrambled up the steps, pointing a manicured finger at my chest. "You can't kick us out! Mom owns this house! Dad left it to her in his will!"

David Sloan stepped forward, unbuttoning his coat and pulling out a blue-bound legal document. "Correction, Miss Vance. Your father’s 2022 amendment created the Vance Family Irrevocable Trust. The real estate title was transferred to the trust prior to his death. Under section 4B of the charter, Eleanor Vance was granted a conditional life estate, subject to strict clauses regarding asset preservation and moral conduct."

"Moral conduct?!" Eleanor laughed maniacally. "I am his widow!"

"And under section 9C," David continued calmly, "any beneficiary or resident who inflicts physical harm, commits financial fraud against the estate, or faces felony charges regarding the property immediately forfeits all residency rights, financial stipends, and inheritance claims."

"That's illegal!" Eleanor screamed, turning to the sheriff. "Deputy! Arrest these men! They are stealing my home!"

The deputy didn't budge. "Mrs. Vance, Mr. Ethan Vance is the legally designated trustee. We are here to ensure the execution of a lawful eviction order issued by Judge Miller two hours ago."

"Look behind you, Eleanor," I pointed toward the driveway.

Two workers were carrying large wardrobe boxes out of the house. Inside were Eleanor’s mink coats, Natalie’s designer shoes, and their personal luggage.

"You have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and step off this property," I instructed cold-bloodedly. "All jewelry, artwork, silver, and luxury vehicles purchased using estate funds over the last two years have been seized under a court-ordered preservation injunction."

"My Mercedes!" Natalie gasped, looking toward the garage where a boot had already been placed on the tire of her convertible. "Ethan, you can't take my car! How am I supposed to drive to work?!"

"Work?" I chuckled bitterly. "You mean the boutique job Mother bought for you using Claire’s stolen inheritance money? You won't need a car for where you're going, Natalie."

Eleanor lunged toward the door, trying to push past the private security guards, but two female deputies intercepted her, holding her arms securely.

"Ethan! I am your mother!" she shrieked, tears finally smearing her mascara as reality began to break through her delusion. "I gave you life! You are ruining our family over a worthless girl!"

Claire isn't a girl. She is my wife," I said, stepping right up to Eleanor, looking into the eyes that had shown no mercy to the woman I loved. "And as of today, you don't have a family anymore. You have a trial."

With a final snap of the heavy brass locks, the locksmiths completed their work. The Vance Estate was officially locked. Eleanor and Natalie were left standing on the icy pavement, clutching three suitcases between them, as the cold winter wind swept across the valley.
