Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Atrium

At 10:00 a.m., the main atrium of St. Catherine’s Children’s Hospital was filled with light streaming through the massive glass ceiling.
Police officers, hospital staff, visitors, and news crews who had gathered outside the building watched as Richard Cole was escorted down the central marble staircase—the very staircase where eighteen hours earlier he had attempted to end Ethan’s life.
Richard’s hands were cuffed behind his back. His gray coat was gone, replaced by a plain dark holding sweater. Beside him walked two federal marshals and Detective Aaron Blake.
As they reached the bottom of the stairs, directly in front of the reception area where Ethan’s chair had accelerated, a large group had assembled.
In the center of the atrium sat Ethan, positioned safely in a temporary manual wheelchair pushed gently by Dr. Lena Foster. Beside him stood Maya, holding his right hand in a firm, unyielding grip.
Richard stopped as the marshals guided him toward the double glass doors. He looked at Ethan, then turned his gaze toward Maya.
For a moment, the atrium fell completely silent except for the soft hum of the ventilation system.
“You think you won, Maya?” Richard said, his voice bitter and thin, devoid of any remaining charm. “You’re sixteen years old. You have no money, no home, and no family left. You have nothing.”
Maya did not flinch. She took one step forward, standing between Richard and Ethan’s wheelchair.
“I have Ethan,” Maya said, her voice echoing clearly across the vast marble hall. “And Ethan has me. We don't need your hotel, we don't need your money, and we don't need your lies.”
Gabriel Ortiz stepped forward from the biomedical team, holding a tablet connected to the atrium’s public information display screens.
With a single tap on his screen, Gabriel projected the synchronized evidence video onto the four massive digital monitors hanging above the reception desk:
On the left screen: The security camera footage showing Richard standing near the waiting area chairs, his hand inside his coat pocket.
On the right screen: The digital telemetry log showing the exact millisecond—14:17:04.002—when the button inside Richard’s pocket sent the high-speed override command to Ethan’s chair.
The video clearly showed Richard’s thumb pressing down inside his coat pocket at the exact second the wheelchair surged forward toward the stairs. It showed Maya springing into action, throwing herself without hesitation into the path of the speeding chair, catching Ethan in her arms and taking the full force of the impact against the hard floor.
A soft, collective murmur of emotion swept through the crowd of nurses, doctors, and visitors watching the screens.
Richard looked up at the monitors, his face gray, his mouth opening and closing without sound. The undeniable truth was displayed fifty feet high for the entire world to see.

“Take him away,” Detective Blake ordered quietly.
The federal marshals guided Richard through the glass doors into the waiting police transport vehicle, where flashbulbs from news cameras flickered continuously against the dark windows.
