The Arrogant Heir Walked Forward Smiling, Never Expecting One Mistake Would End His World

The sharp rhythm of polished leather shoes echoed across the marble floor.
Every guest turned toward the entrance.
Ethan Caldwell emerged from the crowd with the relaxed confidence of someone who had never been told "no." His black tailored suit fit flawlessly, the top button of his dress shirt left open in effortless luxury. He paused only long enough to straighten a silver cufflink before continuing toward the center of the ballroom.
Not once did he glance at the hundreds of stunned guests.
His eyes were fixed entirely on Claire.
She instinctively shrank closer to Richard Hawthorne, her fingers tightening around the older man's sleeve. Her breathing became uneven again, and she lowered her head as though hoping Ethan would simply walk past.
He didn't.
He stopped only a few feet away.
A faint smile curled across his lips.
"So," he said casually, "she found someone to hide behind."
No one answered.
The silence made his smile grow wider.
He looked Claire up and down with open contempt.
"You've always been dramatic."
Claire couldn't force herself to meet his eyes.
Her swollen cheek throbbed with every heartbeat, reminding her of the slap that had sent her crashing into the marble hallway only minutes earlier.
Richard remained perfectly still.
His expression revealed nothing.
Ethan mistook that silence for weakness.
He gave a dismissive shrug.
"She should've stayed in her place."
A few guests exchanged nervous looks.
Several recognized the sentence immediately. Ethan had repeated those words more than once whenever he spoke about employees. Most had laughed politely in the past, assuming it was harmless arrogance.
Tonight, no one laughed.
The woman in the emerald satin gown slowly lowered the champagne glass she had been holding. Something about Richard Hawthorne's face made her stomach tighten.
The old billionaire hadn't blinked.
He hadn't spoken.
He hadn't even shifted his stance.
Yet the air around him seemed to grow colder by the second.
Ethan noticed none of it.
He slipped one hand into his pocket and glanced around the ballroom with the confidence of a man certain everyone present belonged on his side.
"Let's not make this into a bigger scene than it already is," he said with an impatient sigh. "She's only staff."
Claire's shoulders trembled.
Richard finally moved.
Just one step forward.
Nothing in his face changed.

Nothing in his voice warned what was about to happen.
