Chapter 7: Unearthing the Truth

The forensic audit ordered by Julian moved with the speed and precision of a well-oiled machine. Arthur Pendelton arrived at the Sterling estate by late afternoon, carrying a thick leather briefcase stuffed with financial records, bank statements, and overlooked correspondence dating back nearly a decade. Julian sat across from him in the expansive library, while Lily napped peacefully on a nearby sofa under the watchful eye of a trusted senior housekeeper, Mrs. Gable.

Arthur adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, sliding a series of highlighted documents across the mahogany table toward Julian. The numbers told a damning story of systematic exclusion and calculated betrayal.

“It’s worse than we initially feared, Julian,” Arthur said gravely, his voice carrying the weight of decades of loyalty. “Your late father’s estate was indeed partitioned equally on paper. However, Eleanor managed the execution of Clara’s trust allocation. She redirected Clara’s quarterly distributions into a secondary offshore account under a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.”

Julian stared at the figures, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ached along his jawline. “She stole from Clara while my sister was struggling to survive. While she was dying.”

“Not just that,” Arthur continued, turning another page. “There were three certified letters sent by Clara to this exact address five years ago, begging for medical assistance and mentioning a child. All three were logged as received by the estate manager, but they never reached your desk. They were systematically filed away in a restricted archive in the basement.”

Julian closed his eyes, taking a slow, deep breath to steady the rising tide of fury within him. He had trusted Eleanor implicitly, blinded by the polished image she projected to the world. Every charity gala, every high-society dinner party, every philanthropic award she accepted had been funded in part by the money stolen from a dying mother and her innocent child.

“I want every cent recovered, Arthur,” Julian said, his voice cold and steady. “Liquidate the assets tied to those shell corporations immediately. I want every penny transferred into a secure trust fund bearing Clara’s name, exclusively dedicated to Lily’s care and the foundation we are establishing.”

“It will take some time to navigate the international legal hurdles, but we have the jurisdiction and the evidence to dismantle those accounts entirely,” Arthur assured him, closing his briefcase. He looked at Julian with a mixture of sympathy and respect. “You’re doing the right thing, Julian. Your father would be proud to see you reclaiming the true honor of the Sterling name.”

After Arthur left, Julian walked over to the sofa where Lily lay sleeping. He pulled the blanket up higher around her shoulders, watching the gentle rise and fall of her chest. The wealth he had accumulated over a lifetime suddenly seemed entirely worthless compared to the fragile, beating heart of his niece. He knew that material restitution would never bring Clara back, but it was the first essential step toward redemption.
