Chapter 6 - THE BOARD BENEATH THE CHANDELIERS

The emergency board meeting began at one twenty in the morning.

Employees remained along the ballroom walls.

Mara requested that they be allowed to stay.

Warren objected.

“They are not shareholders.”

Grace Chen answered.

“The pension trust they represent is a beneficiary of the misconduct clause.”

The workers stayed.

The original ownership documents were verified by two independent historians, the state corporate archive, and the trust bank.

The Ellis interest was valid.

The bankruptcy conversion was valid.

Mara’s controlling authority had activated on her thirtieth birthday.

The Whitmore family had exercised management without lawful majority ownership for decades.

Beatrice argued that the company’s growth came from Whitmore leadership.

Mara agreed.

“Growth does not erase ownership.”

A hotel empire could not claim an old theft became legal because the stolen property became valuable.

The employee fund records followed.

More than ten million dollars had been redirected.

Some paid for Beatrice’s residences.

Some financed Warren’s companies.

Some covered Celeste’s social events and luxury travel.

Celeste stared at the transfers.

“My events were foundation promotion.”

“You spent one hundred and eighty thousand dollars on a birthday weekend,” Grace said.

“My father approved it.”

Warren answered:

“You signed the reimbursement.”

Celeste turned toward him.

He had begun separating himself from her.

The shell companies connected to the proposed sale were registered in Celeste’s name.

Her signatures appeared throughout.

She claimed she signed without reading.

Several documents carried digital approval from her personal device.

“What did you believe you were signing?” Ruiz asked.

“Restructuring papers.”

“Why were they hidden from the board?”

“My father said confidentiality protected the transaction.”

Warren leaned back.

“Celeste was president of Ashford Development. She possessed independent authority.”

The statement sounded prepared.

Celeste looked toward him.

“You told me Daniel would announce our engagement after the vote.”

Warren did not answer.

“You said the companies would become our marriage assets.”

“Personal conversations are irrelevant.”

“You never planned for me to marry him.”

Daniel remained silent.

The truth did not need his assistance.

Grace presented a contingency statement found inside Warren’s cloud archive.

It described Celeste as the executive who independently selected Blue Meridian vendors, diverted pension funds, planted property on an employee, and attempted to discredit the Ellis beneficiary.

Warren had prepared to blame her for every visible crime.

Celeste read the statement.

Her face emptied.

“Were you leaving tonight?”

The yacht documents answered.

Two passports.

Offshore account access.

A flight plan from international waters.

Warren and Beatrice intended to leave after the transfer.

Celeste would remain as the legal owner of the shell companies.

She had believed cruelty placed her beside power.

It had placed her beneath the falling structure.

Mara addressed the board.

“I propose immediate suspension of Beatrice Whitmore, Warren Ashford, Celeste Ashford, and every executive who approved the fraudulent transfers.”

A director asked whether Daniel should also be suspended because of his marriage to the controlling beneficiary.

Daniel stood before Mara could answer.

“I resign every Whitmore proxy and executive vote.”

Beatrice stared at him.

“You would hand the company to her?”

“No.”

He looked toward the employees.

“I am returning authority my family never lawfully owned.”

Daniel’s personal shares remained, but they did not grant control.

He also requested an independent review of every decision he had made during the investigation.

Mara did not protect him from scrutiny.

The motion passed.

Beatrice lost her chairmanship.

Warren lost his board seat.

Celeste lost access to every account and office.

The anti-coercion clause transferred temporary control to Mara and three independent trustees.

The ballroom screen changed.

ELLIS CONTINUITY TRUST — 51%

EMPLOYEE LEGACY FUND — RESTORED BENEFICIARY

WHITMORE FAMILY INTEREST — MINORITY, UNDER REVIEW

Beatrice looked toward Mara.

“You will destroy everything because of one woman’s death.”

Mara’s voice remained calm.

“No.”

She looked at the employees along the wall.

“I am going to discover how many lives your definition of everything required us to ignore.”

The board approved an independent audit, pension restoration, and preservation of all properties.

Ruiz approached Warren.

“We have probable cause to seize your yacht and devices.”

Warren stood.

“You cannot arrest a man because his daughter lost control at a party.”

“This is not about the scissors.”

The investigator placed Grace’s recording on the table.

“It is about the brakes.”

Warren moved toward the terrace.

Two agents blocked the doors.

Beatrice remained seated.

Celeste looked from her father to Mara.

Then she removed the diamond ring.

She placed it beside the scissors.

“I know where he keeps the original vendor drive.”

Warren turned.

“Do not speak.”

Celeste stared at him.

May you like

“You already wrote my confession.”

For the first time that evening, she chose a side without believing it would make her powerful.
