PART 4: 💥 One Bite Too Many✨

The word echoed in the restaurant long after everyone had finished reading it.

The police officer carefully lifted the photograph.

Twenty-three children smiled at the camera.

Only one face was circled.

A little girl with braided hair and a bright yellow sweater.

On the back of the photo was a handwritten note.

Name: Lily Harper

Age: 8

Status: Unaware

Caleb's mother stared at it.

"Who is she?"

The manager frowned.

"I've never seen her before."

The officer immediately radioed dispatch.

"Run the name. Contact her local police department. Tell them this may be an immediate child endangerment case."

A few tense seconds passed.

Then dispatch answered.

"...Sir?"

"What is it?"

"There is no Lily Harper matching that age."

The officer looked back at the photograph.

"That's impossible."

Dispatch continued.

"There was one."

A pause.

"But according to state records..."

The officer's expression changed.

"...she died three years ago."

Silence.

The mother slowly looked back at the picture.

The smiling girl didn't look like a child who had died.

She looked like she was waiting for school to start tomorrow.

Caleb suddenly whispered,

"She's not dead."

Everyone turned toward him.

His small voice was steady.

"I saw her."

His mother knelt beside him.

"What do you mean?"

Caleb looked at the photograph.

"She was standing outside my classroom last week."

The officer frowned.

"Are you sure?"

Caleb nodded.

"She smiled at me."

He hesitated.

"Then she asked if I wanted to join her club."

The room went cold.

"What club?" his mother asked.

Caleb swallowed.

"I don't remember."

His eyes unfocused for a brief second.

"...I think she asked me not to."

The manager looked uneasily toward the security tablet.

The screen had come back to life.

Without anyone touching it.

A live camera feed appeared.

Not from the restaurant.

Not from outside.

A classroom.

Empty.

Rows of tiny desks.

Morning sunlight pouring through the windows.

On the chalkboard, written in neat white letters:

WELCOME, NEW STUDENTS

The officer whispered,

"Can anyone identify this school?"

Before anyone answered...

a little girl walked into the frame.

Yellow sweater.

Braided hair.

She looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

Then, very slowly...

she raised a piece of paper toward the lens.

On it were six handwritten words.

"Caleb wasn't our first invitation."

The camera feed froze.

The lights flickered.

When the image returned...

the classroom was empty again.

The chalkboard message had changed.

Now it read:

ONE SEAT IS STILL AVAILABLE.

Then, beneath it...

another sentence appeared, letter by letter:

"THE CHILD WHO SURVIVED MAY NOW CHOOSE WHO TAKES HIS PLACE."

Caleb's breathing became shallow.

His mother pulled him into her arms instantly.

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"No one is taking anyone's place."

The security tablet emitted one final tone.

A new notification appeared.

RECIPIENT IDENTIFIED

Everyone leaned closer.

The officer frowned.

"Recipient of what?"

The screen slowly revealed a name.

Not Lily.

Not Caleb.

Not Brittany.

It stopped on a name that made the mother's blood run cold.

May you like

At the bottom of the screen, one final message appeared:

"The invitation was never for the child."
