Part 3: The Morning Manifest

The iron gates of the Vance estate in Alpine, New Jersey, didn't open automatically at 7:00 AM. They were unhinged by a black-painted tactical ram bar attached to the front bumper of a federal utility vehicle.

The sound of the metal shearing through the decorative brass latch echoed across the two-acre estate, a sharp, mechanical scream that brought every crow out of the hemlock trees along the perimeter. Three black SUVs with government plates swept up the winding brick driveway, their tires kicking up patches of frozen mud and gravel before stopping in a perfect semicircle around Caleb’s silver Porsche 911.

I stepped out of the second vehicle, wearing a long, charcoal wool coat and a pair of thick winter boots that had seen more courtrooms than country clubs. Behind me stood two federal marshals in full tactical vests, their gold shields pinned to their lapels, carrying a red plastic lockbox containing the federal asset seizure orders.

The massive front doors of the mansion threw themselves open. Caleb stepped out onto the granite portico, his hair unbrushed, wearing a silk robe over his tailored trousers, his face red with the sudden, violent shock of the intrusion. Behind him stood his father, Arthur Vance, his elderly hands shaking as he adjusted his glasses, his breathing wheezing in the cold morning air.

"What is the meaning of this?" Caleb shouted, his baritone cracking into a thin, hysterical register as he saw the federal agents moving toward the garage. "Who authorized this? Marcus! Call the state police! There are people trespassing on private corporate property!"

Marcus, the private security guard who had worked the gate for three years, didn't move from his station near the driveway. He was currently standing with his hands behind his back, watching a federal agent place an orange utility boot over the front wheel of Caleb’s Porsche.

I walked up the granite steps, the sound of my boots heavy, deliberate, and regular. I stopped three feet below the portico, looking up at the man who had spent three years telling my sister that she was nothing without his name.

"The state police aren't coming, Caleb," I said, pulling a blue-bound legal folio from my coat pocket. "The federal district court has assumed administrative jurisdiction over this property, your corporate vehicles, and every bank ledger associated with the Vance name within the continental United States."

Caleb’s eyes narrowed into tiny slits of venomous hatred as he recognized my face. "Lena... you stupid, vindictive bitch. You think you can use your little legal tricks to scare me? My uncle is the—"

"Your uncle is currently being interviewed by the internal affairs division of the state supreme court regarding three separate compliance waivers he signed for your infrastructure loans, Caleb," I said, tossing the blue folio onto the stone steps at his feet. "He won't be returning your calls this morning. Or any other morning for the next five years."

Arthur Vance stepped forward, his voice cracking as he reached out toward my coat sleeve. "Lena, please... this is a family company. Your father and I started this business in a garage in Newark. If the federal treasury locks the escrow accounts, the sub-contractors will walk off the job sites by noon. We’ll lose the state charter!"

"You lost the state charter when your son used the public school fund to buy his mother's diamond rivière necklace, Arthur," I said, not looking at the old man, keeping my eyes fixed entirely on Caleb’s pale, sweating face. "And you lost your family when you watched your daughter-in-law walk into Thanksgiving dinner with a scarf around her neck in ninety-degree weather and you chose to ask about the quarterly dividends instead of her health."

Caleb took a step down the stairs, his fist clenching until his knuckles turned the color of old bone. "Where is she? Where is my wife? She signed the marital disclosure forms, Lena. She belongs in this house. If she doesn't appear at the asset hearing this morning, I'll file a parental kidnapping warrant with the county sheriff before the sun is up."

"Your wife is currently sitting in a private suite at the Saint Jude Medical Center under federal witness protection, Caleb," I said, stepping back into the shadow of the marshals as they moved past me up the steps. "She’s not your wife anymore. She’s the primary state witness for thirty-two counts of grand larceny, bank fraud, and domestic terrorism under the federal infrastructure statutes. You can talk to her through the glass at the federal holding facility in Newark."
