Chapter 1: The Sanctuary's Breach

The heavy scent of lilies and beeswax hung thick in the air of St. Jude’s parish. Sunlight filtered through stained glass, casting bruised violet and amber shadows over the polished oak pews. It was supposed to be a place of quiet mourning, a sacred space dedicated to the peaceful departure of Margaret Vance. Instead, the solemn silence shattered the moment Eleanor Vance stormed down the central aisle. At fifty years old, Eleanor’s frame was rigid inside her sharp teal suit, every line of her posture radiating a controlled, white-hot fury. Her short blonde hair looked windswept, framing a face twisted into an aggressive, unforgiving glare.

Standing near the front row, beside an empty pew, was Clara. At thirty, Clara’s appearance was the antithesis of her older sister's polished armor. Dressed entirely in black, her red hair was pulled back into a severe knot, though loose strands clung to her damp cheeks. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from silent weeping. She clutched a crumpled tissue in trembling fingers, her shoulders shaking with suppressed grief as she gazed toward the dark mahogany casket resting softly under a blanket of white roses and chrysanthemums.

Eleanor closed the distance with terrifying speed, her heels clicking sharply against the stone floor. She stopped inches from Clara, invading her personal space with calculated hostility. Without waiting for a breath, Eleanor’s voice echoed off the vaulted ceiling, sharp and unforgiving.

"You don't get to cry here!" Eleanor shouted, the words carrying a lifetime of accumulated resentment.

Clara flinched, the sound striking her like a physical blow. She did not look away, though her breath hitched. Eleanor leaned in closer, her nostrils flaring, venom dripping from every syllable.

"You abandoned our mother!" Eleanor hissed, her voice dropping to a harsh, vibrating register. "You packed your bags and ran off to the city, leaving me to change her sheets, manage her medications, and watch her fade away alone. And now that she’s gone, you crawl back out of the woodwork? What, you want her money?"

Clara swallowed hard. Slowly, she lifted her chin, meeting her sister's hostile gaze with a terrifying, unnerving calm. The tears dried in her eyes, replaced by a cold, steady resolve. With a voice barely louder than a rustling leaf, Clara whispered, "Are you sure about that?"

Before Eleanor could process the chilling question, her rage took over. A low growl escaped her throat, and she raised a fist, drawing it back to strike Clara across the face.

Before the blow could land, a heavy hand firmly grasped Eleanor’s wrist. She gasped, spinning around to face the intruder. Standing right beside the altar flowers was a tall, fifty-year-old bald man with a distinguished gray beard and mustache. He wore a tailored gray suit and tie, and in his left hand, he held a worn leather briefcase.

Eleanor yanked her arm out of his grip, stepping back with a scowl. "Who the hell are you?" she demanded, her voice echoing in the nave.

The man did not flinch. He adjusted his cuff links, his expression completely unreadable as he met her furious gaze. "The estate attorney for the late Margaret," he answered firmly.
