Chapter 12 - THE RECORDINGS

The flash drive contained thirty-seven video files.

Each had been recorded inside Bright Path consultation rooms.

Hale had installed hidden cameras to protect himself.

He recorded mothers signing documents.

He recorded wealthy clients discussing payments.

He recorded Margaret instructing staff on how to identify women who could be pressured.

One file showed Margaret sitting across from a nineteen-year-old mother named Sofia Alvarez.

Sofia cradled a newborn girl against her chest.

Margaret placed a hospital bill on the table.

“You owe forty-eight thousand dollars.”

Sofia looked terrified.

“I don’t have that kind of money.”

“Then sign.”

“I want my baby.”

“Wanting a child is not the same as being able to provide for one.”

The recording continued.

Margaret threatened to report Sofia for neglect.

She claimed immigration officials would be contacted.

She promised the debt would disappear if Sofia surrendered custody.

Sofia signed while crying.

Her daughter was transferred to a couple in another state.

The couple had paid Bright Path two hundred thousand dollars.

Another recording showed a mother still under anesthesia.

Jenna guided the woman’s hand across a signature line.

Hale notarized it.

The most important file showed Ethan.

The date was six weeks before the twins were born.

He sat beside Margaret in Hale’s office.

A copy of my medical file lay open on the table.

Hale asked whether I would cooperate.

Ethan laughed.

“She’ll fight at first.”

“But Olivia believes in systems.”

“If the paperwork looks official, she’ll waste time trying to challenge it properly.”

Margaret replied that I would be weak after surgery.

Ethan nodded.

“She won’t make a scene.”

“She hates scenes.”

Then Hale asked what would happen if I discovered the forgery.

Ethan’s answer was quiet.

“By then, Noah will be gone.”

I watched the recording once.

Only once.

Lena offered to turn it off before the end.

I refused.

I needed to know the truth without editing.

Ethan had not been manipulated during a single moment of panic.

He had planned.

He had studied my character and turned my principles into weaknesses.

He believed my respect for the law would make me slow.

He believed my privacy would keep me silent.

He believed my love for him would make me doubt the evidence.

He had been wrong about one thing.

I did not love him anymore.

The task force identified the person who mailed the drive.

It was Hale’s former office manager, Denise Walker.

She had copied the recordings months earlier because she suspected the firm was committing fraud.

Fear kept her silent.

My case convinced her that silence would only protect the people responsible.

Her evidence led agents to the hidden server containing client records.

The adoption ledger remained missing.

Yet the videos exposed enough names to begin locating the children.

Eleven were found within two weeks.

Ten lived with families who claimed they believed the placements were legal.

One child had been taken overseas.

The twelfth remained missing.

His birth name was Gabriel Reed.

He had been born at St. Mary’s eighteen months earlier.

His mother never signed an adoption agreement.

She had been told he died shortly after delivery.

The hospital had no death certificate.

No burial record.

No body transfer documentation.

Only a note in the electronic chart.

The note had been entered by Jenna Cole.
