Chapter 10 - THE EDEN PROTOCOL

The gas was not poison.
It was a sedative.
Maren realized this as her muscles weakened and the room tilted. Federal agents tried to break the door, but one by one they collapsed.
Eleanor reached for Maren before falling beside Charles’s bed.
The last thing Maren saw was Adrian smiling from the monitor.
She woke restrained in a medical chair.
A bright surgical light burned above her.
Charles lay on a bed nearby. Eleanor was strapped to another chair. Anna stood inside a glass enclosure across the laboratory.
Adrian entered wearing a dark suit beneath a white medical coat.
“You have always been theatrical,” Maren said.
Her voice was thick from the sedative.
“I learned from your family.”
“What do you want?”
“The Eden Protocol.”
“I thought Anna carried it.”
“She carries the original data. But Charles created a second system.”
Maren looked toward her father.
He was awake.
“Don’t tell him anything,” Charles said.
Adrian adjusted a monitor.
“He has resisted for seven years. I admire persistence, even when it becomes irrational.”
Eleanor pulled against her restraints.
“You kept him alive to extract a password.”
“Not merely a password.”
Adrian touched the side of Charles’s head.
“The second ledger was divided into biological keys.”
Maren remembered the phrase.
The ledger is a person.
“Whose biology?” she asked.
“Charles used family DNA. His own, Eleanor’s, and both daughters’.”
Adrian smiled.
“The data cannot be decrypted unless all four genetic signatures are present.”
“That is why you kept watching us.”
“That is why I kept you alive.”
Maren felt cold.
The accident had not been intended to kill her. Reed’s dinner plan may have been designed to force the emergency protocol, drawing Eleanor out of hiding.
Adrian had manipulated every side.
“Reed thought he was saving Dad.”
“Reed believed whatever made his cowardice bearable.”
“And Celeste?”
“She wanted to matter.”
Adrian looked toward the laboratory entrance.
Celeste was brought in by two guards.
Her wrists were bound.
Maren stared at her.
“How did you get here?”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“They took me during transport.”
Adrian now had all four genetic keys.
Eleanor, Charles, Maren, and Celeste.
Technicians moved through the room collecting blood samples.
Maren watched carefully.
One technician wore a federal medical badge.
The other had a small tremor in his left hand.
Marcus Bell had mentioned that Adrian planted people everywhere.
But Maren noticed something else.
The trembling technician avoided meeting Adrian’s eyes.
Fear.
Potential weakness.
Adrian placed four sample tubes into a machine.
A screen displayed a sequence of encrypted symbols.
“Once the data opens,” he said, “I will erase every record connecting me to the network and assume control of the accounts Charles froze.”
“How much?” Maren asked.
“Money is the least interesting part.”
“How much?”
“Approximately nine-point-four billion dollars.”
Celeste stared at him.
“You threatened us for money?”
“I built influence. Money simply preserves it.”
The machine requested a spoken phrase.
Adrian turned toward Charles.
“The final key.”
Charles smiled faintly.
“You never understood Eleanor.”
Adrian’s patience thinned.
“The phrase.”
“She changed it.”
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
She appeared confused.
Charles continued.
“The night before the helicopter crash, I gave her a poem. The final phrase came from it.”
Eleanor’s eyes widened.
Maren watched her mother carefully.
Charles was lying.
Or communicating.
Eleanor began reciting softly.
“Where shadows end and morning starts…”
Adrian moved closer to the console.
“…the heart remembers what fear forgot.”
The system accepted the phrase.
A progress bar appeared.
Adrian smiled.
“Thank you.”
Charles looked at Maren.
His right hand moved weakly against the blanket.
One finger.
Then eight.
Then zero.
A countdown?
Maren looked at the progress bar.
Eighteen percent.
Charles repeated the gesture.
One. Eight. Zero.
The hidden emergency code beneath the dining table had frozen eighteen million dollars.
One-eight-zero might be a reversal command.
Maren looked at Eleanor.
Her mother had seen it too.
The trembling technician approached Maren with a needle.
She whispered, “Marcus sent me.”
Hope surged.
“What do we do?” Maren breathed.
“Wait for sixty percent.”
The progress bar climbed.
Adrian watched the screen.
At sixty percent, the lights flickered.
The technician drove the needle into Maren’s restraint buckle instead of her arm. A chemical hissed, melting the locking mechanism.
Eleanor’s restraints released simultaneously.
Charles pressed a hidden switch beneath his mattress.
The laboratory doors sealed.
Adrian turned.
“What have you done?”
The screen changed.
EDEN PURGE ACTIVATED.
The nine-point-four-billion-dollar account network began transferring not to Adrian—but to a federal restitution trust Charles had created decades earlier.
Adrian lunged for the console.
Maren freed one hand and struck the emergency alarm.
Sprinklers activated.
Anna shattered the weakened glass enclosure using a metal stool.
Celeste kicked one guard while Eleanor seized the other’s weapon.
Chaos erupted.
Adrian grabbed Charles by the throat.
“Stop the transfer!”
Charles gasped.
“I would rather die.”
Maren rolled her chair into Adrian, crushing him against the bed rail.
He struck her across the face and pulled a scalpel from the surgical tray.
Celeste threw herself between them.
The blade entered her side.
Maren screamed.
Eleanor fired.
The bullet struck Adrian’s leg.
He fell but crawled toward the door.
Security alarms echoed through the facility.
Marcus’s technician had opened an external channel. Federal teams were entering through the service tunnel.
Adrian dragged himself toward a ventilation shaft.
Eleanor aimed again.
Charles caught her wrist.
“Alive,” he said. “He answers alive.”
Agents stormed the laboratory.
Adrian was restrained.
Celeste lay on the floor, blood spreading beneath her.
Maren transferred out of the chair and crawled to her.
“No. Stay with me.”
Celeste’s lips trembled.
“I chose right this time.”
“You don’t get to die and call it redemption.”
A medic pressed gauze against the wound.
Celeste looked at Maren.
“I’m sorry.”
Maren held her hand.
“I know.”
The monitor behind them reached one hundred percent.
Across the world, secret accounts froze. Names, transactions, and evidence uploaded automatically to courts and investigative agencies.
Adrian watched from the floor as the empire he built dissolved.
“You think this ends with me?” he said.
Maren looked at him.
“No.”
May you like
She tightened her grip on Celeste’s hand.
“It begins with you.”
